LG and Hyundai Collaborate In-Car Entertainment with WebOS for Automotive

LG Electronics (LG) has officially disclosed its plans to integrate its in-vehicle infotainment system, featuring webOS for Automotive, the company’s automotive content platform, into Hyundai Motor Group’s new Genesis models.

A ceremony in Los Angeles, U.S., on October 31, where LG welcomed Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai) and YouTube to commemorate the introduction of webOS for Automotive to Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis. The gathering also served as a platform for discussing potential collaborations to elevate the in-vehicle entertainment experience.

The ceremony, held at the Two California Plaza, was centered around the installation of GV80 on the in-vehicle webOS content platform for the beginnings of a partnership between LG, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors, and YouTube.

The discussions held during this event aimed to explore avenues for creating an enriched in-vehicle entertainment customer experience, aligning with the shared objectives of these innovative companies.

Hyundai’s latest Genesis models are now equipped with an advanced infotainment system that leverages the capabilities of webOS for Automotive. The integration enables passengers in front and rear seats to indulge in high-definition content, mirroring the comfort and quality they typically experience with their smartphones or TVs.

Specifically, this system will be supplied to the upcoming 2024 Genesis GV80 and GV80 Coupe models. By combining the YouTube-specific app with the car webOS, the solution offers passengers an optimized in-vehicle viewing environment, marking a significant step in enhancing the overall driving experience.

The platform has amassed a cumulative sales figure of 200 million in the Smart TV market; LG has adapted and evolved this platform specifically for vehicle use. The result is a system that grants drivers and passengers access to a broad spectrum of over-the-top (OTT) services, with YouTube being a prominent inclusion, all thoughtfully optimized for the in-car environment.

LG, Hyundai, and YouTube engaged in a collaboration that led to the integration of YouTube’s native TV app into WebOS for Automotive. This not only ensures passengers enjoy an enhanced in-vehicle viewing experience but also highlights the use of newly developed native touch solutions within WebOS for Automotive.

Kwon Hae-young, vice president of the Infotainment Development Center at Hyundai Motor Group, expressed his views, saying, “Thanks to technological development based on SDV, people can comfortably enjoy various video content in their vehicles.”

“We will continue to expand our collaboration with major global content companies to provide more diverse and valuable in-vehicle experiences to our customers,” he added.

With an insightful grasp of customers and their dynamic living environments, LG conducted a press conference at IAA Mobility 2023, held in Munich, Germany, in September. During this event, LG’s CEO, William Cho, articulated the company’s outlook and unveiled its visionary approach to the future of the mobility sector, encapsulated under the theme of “Taking Life’s Good on the Road.”
