The South Korean government plans to launch Intelligent Home” (AI@Home) through a collaborative effort involving prominent companies in various sectors, including Samsung, LG, Hyundai E&C, and Korea Land & Housing Corp. (LH). The new project will create intelligent homes within apartment buildings, enhancing residential living through technologies. The announcement was made during the Emergency Economic Ministers’ Meeting on the 9th.
To facilitate the growth of intelligent homes, a new certification named the “Intelligent Home (AI@Home) certification” will be introduced. This certification will support the branding and adoption of smart homes.
As part of this project’s progression, the “Intelligent Home Alliance” is set to be established within the current year. This alliance will encompass various industries, from construction and home appliance manufacturing to device production and artificial intelligence integration.
Anticipating a future where smart homes are more advanced than their predecessors, the industry envisions a seamless integration of various home devices, lighting systems, and doors manufactured by different companies.
All of these elements will operate through a unified global standard system, allowing users to control their homes conveniently. This transformation will be driven by artificial intelligence technology, enabling tailored and personalized services.
Unlike the fragmented landscape of the past, where different manufacturers and construction firms adhered to their standards, the Ministry of Science and ICT is taking a step forward with the “Intelligent Home Leading Project,” adopting the “Matter,” a unified Internet of Things (IoT) protocol.
With this, prominent players like Samsung, LG, Google, Amazon, and Apple, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) will follow IoT standard integration protocols, facilitating interoperability and control across diverse IoT devices.
The concept integrates home appliances, lighting systems, and doors under a unified global standard, offering tailored services powered by artificial intelligence. This trend has gained traction in countries like the United States and China, where the adoption of intelligent home services is rapidly rising.
With over 530 companies participating in the Matter initiative, the foundation for a more connected and standardized intelligent home ecosystem is being laid.
The initial phase of this initiative encompasses the current year and the next, focusing on supporting service demonstrations through two branches: “AI Sphere Home” and “AIBIS” (AI-Based Integrated Service Home).
AI Sphere Home involves collaboration from entities such as LH, Commax, LG Electronics, Clio, and Green Soft, to develop senior healthcare services. Meanwhile, AIBIS includes Hyundai Construction, Hyundai HT, Samsung Electronics, and High Quality, working together to create device-linked services aligned with specific scenarios.
As the endeavor progresses, the implementation of generative AI and home robots is planned for the project’s second stage.
The ministry plans to inaugurate an internationally accredited testing laboratory within the same time frame to enhance the competitiveness of local enterprises on the global stage. This initiative is designed to enable local companies to acquire global certification without venturing overseas.
Conversely, Korea‘s intelligent home sector has thus far offered a limited range of functionalities, primarily centered around wall pads or artificial intelligence speakers.
