Samsung to Unveil Semicon Humanoids and Advanced Robotics Plans on Samsung Tech Day 2023

Samsung, the renowned South Korean semiconductor giant is set to unveil its vision for system semiconductors at the upcoming Samsung Tech Day 2023, scheduled for this October 5. Samsung Electronics gears up to elaborate on its plans to create “Semicon humanoids,” or robots possessing human-like sensory capabilities, including smelling and tasting.

The announcement will emerge from Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Division during the Samsung Tech Day 2023 event in Silicon Valley. A keynote address by Park Yong-in, President of the System LSI Business Division, is anticipated to outline these Semicon humanoids’ progress and commercialization strategies.

Samsung Electronics is renowned for producing image sensors, high-performance semiconductors that serve as the eyes of cameras. Expanding its horizons, the company is actively working on semiconductors with the capability to detect a wide array of sensory inputs, including taste, smell, hearing, and touch, in addition to vision.

The System LSI Division has formed a dedicated team to explore specific applications of Semicon humanoids. Joo Hyuk, Vice President of this newly established task force, is expected to introduce a medical robot that harnesses the potential of Semicon humanoids during Samsung Tech Day, providing a glimpse into the promising intersection of semiconductor technology and advanced robotics.

Diverging from the previous year’s Tech Day forum, which encompassed new developments in memory chip technologies, Samsung‘s forthcoming event will shift its focus to logic and system chips, as stated by the company.

During this year’s forum, Samsung will exhibit an array of devices and solutions designed to employ the potential of artificial intelligence, 5G communications, and machine vision. These technologies are anticipated to drive the future of technology, propelling innovation in diverse fields.

The upcoming forum will feature insightful presentations by prominent industry figures. Benny Katibian, Vice President of the Samsung Austin Research and Development Center (SARC) and Advanced Computing Lab (ACL), who recently transitioned from Qualcomm to Samsung, will elucidate the current status of Samsung’s GPU and neural network processing unit (NPU) technologies.

Further expanding on the event’s scope, Lim Seok-hwan, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ LSI Division, will deliver a presentation centered around language learning model (LLM) related technologies.

The overview will encompass artificial intelligence (AI) advancements and highlight the significance of ChatGPT. Joined by a panel of speakers in the United States, Lim’s presentation promises insights into language-related technologies, contributing to the broader discourse on innovation.

Adding to the roster of presentations, prominent American fabless company AMD is set to participate in Samsung Tech Day. AMD’s Vice President, Martin Ashton, will take the stage to offer a comprehensive update on the strides made in their technological collaboration with Samsung Electronics.

Specifically, the focus will be on the advancements achieved in developing the GPU Eclipse tailored for smartphone application processors (APs) since the inception of their alliance in 2022.
