Telco Giants Unite: SK Telecom and Global Partners Create a Platform for AI-Powered Business Models

SK Telecom, along with leading telecommunications companies from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, announced the launch of the “Global Telco AI Alliance” at its inaugural CEO Summit. Participating members of the Global Telco AI Alliance include SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel.

The alliance is expected to accelerate AI transformation within the telco business and develop new AI-powered business models for enhanced customer experiences worldwide.

The summit, hosted at Seoul Walkerhill on July 27, served as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange, focusing on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecom industry. Notable figures present included Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, and Yoo Young-sang, president of SK Telecom.

At the summit, the participating companies, SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel, collectively signed a Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in the AI business.

The “Global Telco AI Alliance CEO Summit” marked a significant milestone as SK Telecom and three other leading telcos, Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singtel, joined hands to establish the Telco AI Platform. This platform will play a pivotal role in planning and developing new AI services, including a Large Language Model (LLM) for creating AI agents tailored to each telecommunications company’s needs in the future.

Chairman Chey Tae-won, who attended the summit in person, expressed his congratulations on the alliance’s launch. He urged global telco business leaders to unite their strengths and embrace transformation, evolving into AI companies capable of providing innovative communication experiences.

The four telecom giants will jointly develop the Telco AI Platform by combining their respective technologies and capabilities. This platform is expected to serve as the core foundation for a host of new AI services, encompassing improvements to existing telco services, digital assistants, and super apps offering diverse services.

As part of their collaboration efforts, the companies will establish the Global Telco AI Alliance Joint Working Group, facilitating in-depth discussions on crucial aspects such as co-investment opportunities and the co-development of the Telco AI Platform, leading to a definitive agreement.

Furthermore, the group will consider designating a C-level officer from each company to oversee and coordinate the overall cooperation for seamless progress.

The summit’s theme was centered around “sharing the vision of the Global Telco AI Alliance,” emphasizing the need to create new value through cooperation and shared knowledge.

Claudia Nemat said, “Through the Telco AI Alliance, we expect to develop applications for telcos to maximize the potential of generative AI for our customers and industries,” and stated, “The launch of this alliance will be an important milestone for our industry.
