Kakao Corp remains at the top spot for the second time in a row, as the most preferred company by university students, followed by Samsung Electronics and Naver. This is based on an annual survey conducted by Job Korea on over 1100 university students in the region.

Kakao Corp garnered the top place with 15.3% votes in a multiple-choice questionnaire. The internet company beat Samsung Electronics that gained 9% votes, and stood in second place. Last year, Samsung was two spots behind at the fourth place in the same survey. Naver went down by one step from last year and stood at third place with 6.5% votes.

Companies that followed the top three are AmorePacific at the fourth place with 6.4% of the votes to its credit, followed by Netmarble 6.3%, Korean Air Line 5.3%, Industrial Bank of Korea 4.0%, and NCSoft 4.0 percent, LG Innotek 3.9 percent and Samsung C&T 3.9 percent.

An official from Job Korea stated, “Internet companies are being favored over the recent years. Game companies are top-rated this year as they compete fiercely to hire developers.”

The survey revealed that students who pursued science or engineering preferred Samsung Electronics to any other company and contributed 10.4% of the votes. Kakao moved to the second spot with 8.8% of the votes, and Nemarble stood in third at 6.6%.

Only students who majored in business and finance and humanities and social studies and entertainment and sports picked Kakao as the best workplace.

For about 22.6% of the respondents, their dream workplace depended on their freedom to what they want. The second most cited contributor was welfare policies and work environment, with 22.2%, while 20.8% cited job security and 18.5% cited high salary.

Kakao Corp was founded in 2006 by Kim Bum-soo as Kakao Inc., and it was only in 2010 that the company went on to become what we know about it today. Kakao Corp and Daum Communications decided to merge in 2014 and was called Daum Kakao. However, it underwent yet another change and rebranded itself as Kakao in 2015.
