South Korean chemical company SK Global Chemical Co. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LogisALL Consulting and Engineering. Besides its electronics and chemical-related services, LogisALL also offers pallet and container rental, logistics business consulting, and SCM. In line with the country’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiative, the partnership will facilitate the reduction of logistics waste.

“We will be able to upcycle damaged pallets to make new plastic products such as eco-friendly packaging containers,” said SK Global Chemical. During the signing ceremony at SK Seorin, SK Global Chemical President Na Kung-soo and LogisALL Chairman Suh Byong-yoon were present. The SK Innovation affiliate explained that the collaboration came from emerging environmental problems and the collective responsibility to address them. To reduce the amount of waste in logistics packaging, both companies would establish a resource circulation system.

Under the agreement, the two companies would be establishing a virtuous cycle system for logistics waste and pallet recycling. By utilizing their combined knowledge in waste reduction and operation know-how, both companies would co-develop eco-friendly plastic packaging materials. SK Global Chemical and LogisALL would collaborate in enhancing plastic recycling technologies in addition to the eco-friendly packaging. By 2025, LogisALL targets to replace over 10 percent of Korea’s plastic parcel delivery containers with eco-friendly materials.

“SK Global Chemical will build a green business model in all places that use plastics, including the logistics industry from an ESG perspective,” said SK Global Chemical’s president. “Environmental problems caused by excessive waste can be greatly reduced if disposable packaging materials are replaced with eco-friendly plastic packaging materials that can be reused for a long period, or used plastics are recovered and recycled to make products again,” continued Na.

SK Global Chemical’s plastic recycling technologies

Earlier this year, SK Global Chemical partnered with US-based waste solutions provider Brightmark. Under the collaboration, the two companies would produce and commercialize pyrolysis-based plastic recycling technology. Through pyrolysis technology, both companies could help in the advancement of the circular economy of plastic. Last year, SK Global Chemical hosted the 2020 Korea Eco-Friendly Packaging Forum, a gathering of institutions that provide packaging solutions. Intending to help solve the plastic waste problem, the institutions shared eco-friendly plans on reducing packaging waste.
