Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom announced they have completed the first 5G Standalone (SA) trial in the Czech Republic. In line with their venture to European 5G markets, Samsung conducted 5G trials with DT, a leading European service provider. With the innovation trial taking place in Pilsen, the two companies evaluated the performance of 5G SA Multi-User, Multiple-Input, and Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) technologies.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Samsung to verify the performance of its 5G SA solution,” said Alex Choi, Senior Vice President of Deutsche Telekom’s Strategy and Technology Innovation. “Together with strong partners we are consistently introducing advanced technical capabilities into our network, and we are very excited about the potential of 5G SA networks to further accelerate the 5G evolution.”

5G SA solutions give mobile service providers a more effective and straightforward network system performance. With Samsung’s MIMO radio products, operators can select the best 5G deployment method according to different factors and site requirements. This technology allows service providers to optimize 5G service coverage and capacity. Developers also equipped the Massive MIMO radios with a lightweight and compact design so operators could easily install the devices.

“Samsung is glad to successfully conduct the first Massive MIMO call on an end-to-end 5G architecture within the DT Group in Europe. This is an important milestone in both companies’ efforts to bring 5G to the next phase,” said Kim Woojune, Senior Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Global Sales and Marketing, Networks Business unit. “Leveraging Samsung’s technical capabilities, DT will provide the ability of 5G to deliver unprecedented values to users.”

Samsung’s 5G solutions and equipment

Using Samsung’s 3.5GHz Massive MIMO radio, Samsung and DT tested and verified the capabilities and performance of the MU-MIMO technology. The two companies obtained excellent results, with the spectrum efficiency tripling compared to LTE. The throughput also increased by up to 2.5 times compared to Single-User MIMO.

With the increase of next-generation communication technologies, Samsung Electronics is constantly upgrading their 5G solutions. In addition to the MIMO radio products, Samsung also utilized the 5G Core. Samsung’s 5G Core could give service providers capacity for quick and reliable network slicing and edge computing. The South Korean electronics company has also supplied 5G services in international markets including Canada, Japan, and New Zealand.
