KT Corp., a major South Korean telecommunications company, on Thursday, announced an in-car infotainment system built for Renault Samsung Motors Corp. vehicles ready for distribution this year. KT Corp. established a partnership with Renault Samsung last year.

The system would provide a combined platform consisting of information displays such as weather reports, audio and voice control, entertainment, music, air conditioning, safety, and navigation features. Some premium vehicles would have a full display across the dashboard.

Drivers can connect their smartphones via Android Auto and Apple‘s CarPlay to access road information or contact emergency services when the car detects abnormal activities such as a malfunction of car parts or car crash.

KT stated on Thursday that the company developed an artificial intelligence-based auto assistant for Renault Samsung vehicles. An AI-based infotainment system for Renault Samsung would allow drivers to use actual online streaming services for music, navigation, and other services like weather and air quality information.

Fast-Growing Connected Car Industry

Choi Kang-rim, head of KT’s connected car business, said that the company would develop its connected service area to Asia and aims to become the leader in the fast-growing connected car industry.

KT’s would provide a customized connected AI system that could easily recognize the user’s voice. The AI system could give destinations and route info to the nearest gas station if the fuel level is low. It can also sense malfunctions and notify the driver for a maintenance checkup.

KT would start providing infotainment systems for Renault Samsung’s “XM3,” a coupe-type SUV released in March this year and “QM6,” a sport utility vehicle (SUV) released in 2019.

The company joined with Hyundai Mobis to create connected car technologies and autonomous driving based on its 5G mobile communication network.

The company’s statement comes as local carriers have recently started on developing connected mobility technology.

SK Telecom, KT’s local rival, told last month that it collaborated with Volvo Cars Korea Co. to supply its car infotainment system to its vehicles scheduled to launch in the country next year.
