SK Telecom and Lambda Unveil Major AI Cloud Initiative with New GPU Cluster in Seoul

SK Telecom (SKT) has announced a new collaboration with AI developer Lambda to enhance its AI cloud services in South Korea. The partnership will see the installation of a large-scale NVIDIA GPU cluster at SK Telecom’s Gasan data center in Seoul by the end of the year.

This cluster will leverage Lambda’s cloud computing platform, supported by advanced NVIDIA technology, to support AI cloud business opportunities nationwide.

The initiative will address the increasing demand for AI services in South Korea. By deploying this extensive GPU infrastructure, SK Telecom and Lambda plan to provide businesses with strong computing power essential for developing and deploying advanced AI applications.

The partnership will introduce GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), enabling businesses to access scalable GPU resources on demand for AI development. By the end of this year, this service will be available through the NVIDIA GPU clusters installed at SK Broadband’s Gasan data center.

Lambda’s AI cloud services, utilizing NVIDIA’s latest GPUs, will offer high-performance computing capabilities to enterprises. The Gasan data center, operated by SK Broadband, will feature these GPU clusters and is set to expand its GPU capacity significantly over the next three years. The facility currently supports a power density of 44 kilowatts per rack.

Stephen Balaban, CEO and co-founder of Lambda highlighted the shared vision of making GPU computing as essential as electricity. “Given the rapid pace of innovation in AI happening in South Korea, we’re excited to partner with SKT and support their effort to grow and develop their AI cloud expertise in the region,” he added.

The new AI data center in Seoul will allow domestic companies to utilize Lambda’s GPU-based AI cloud services locally, which makes the company’s first venture outside North America.

Kim Kyeong-deog, Vice President and Head of the Enterprise Business Division at SK Telecom, spoke about the strategic importance of this partnership, stating that it will strengthen the company’s position in AI cloud services and create new business prospects within Korea. He also mentioned SK Telecom’s ambition to build Korea’s largest GPU farm to enhance national AI competitiveness and establish a gateway to the global market.

This announcement follows SK Telecom’s recent partnership with Singtel to develop next-generation telecom networks and explore AI and 6G technology innovations. SK Telecom and Lambda aim to advance AI cloud capabilities, leveraging their combined expertise to support the growing demand for AI solutions in South Korea and beyond.
