Korean memory manufacturer SK Hynix is launching a high-speed solid-state drive (SSD) tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) PCs.

Designed to enable small-scale generative AI large language models (LLMs) to run locally, these AI PCs are characterized by advanced processors with integrated neural processing units (NPUs) capable of handling computational tasks without relying on cloud-based systems.

Industry leaders like Dell and Lenovo are looking to capitalize on this innovation, encouraging users and businesses to upgrade their workstations to these AI PCs.

SK Hynix announced the development of the PCB01 SSD, an NVMe drive optimized for on-device AI PCs. This new SSD, slated for mass production within the year, is expected to support SK Hynix’s leadership in the AI memory segment. By integrating AI capabilities directly into the device, the PCB01 SSD eliminates the need for computation through remote servers, enhancing performance and efficiency.

The PCB01 SSD, first introduced at GTC 2024, has specifications designed to accelerate AI applications. One of its standout features is the ability to load LLMs to system DRAM in just one second, a claim that makes it a critical component for AI-driven computing.

Jae-young Yun, head of NAND Product Planning and Enablement at SK Hynix, highlighted that PCB01 is not only designed for AI PCs but will also gain attention in the gaming and high-end PC markets.

The PCB01 drive incorporates 238-layer TLC (3 bits per cell) 3D NAND with a high-speed SLC cache and supports an eight-lane Gen 5 PCIe bus. It will be available in 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, with sequential read speeds of up to 14 Gbps and write speeds of up to 12 Gbps. While these speeds are competitive within the PCIe gen 5 SSD market, they are not record-breaking, with other suppliers like ADATA and FADU offering similar performance.

SK Hynix plans to mass-produce the PCB01 SSD and start shipping it to corporate and general consumers this year. The company is currently validating the drive with a global PC maker. The SSD promises over 30% improved power efficiency compared to previous models, making it suitable for large-scale AI computing tasks. The inclusion of SLC caching technology further enhances performance for AI services and conventional computing.

This new drive, SK Hynix’s first PCIe 5.0 SSD, improves upon the company’s previous generation SSDs, doubling the bandwidth and setting a new standard for performance and efficiency.

Ahn Hyun, head of the N-S Committee at SK Hynix, mentioned that several global CPU providers for on-device AI PCs are keen to validate the PCB01 drive with their processors.

The company anticipates that labeling SSDs with an “AI PC” tag will become a trend, enhancing their appeal in a rapidly evolving market.
