According to reports from CNBC, Samsung Electronics is exploring the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its voice assistant, Bixby. This potential upgrade will enhance the functionality of Samsung’s devices, spanning smartphones, smartwatches, and home appliances.

The introduction of generative AI to Bixby is Samsung’s latest effort to strengthen its position in the AI space. According to recent statements from the company’s executive vice president, Won-joon Choi, Samsung Electronics is considering a major upgrade to its voice assistant, Bixby, by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Bixby, introduced in 2017 alongside the Galaxy S8 smartphone, has since expanded its presence across various Samsung devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and home appliances.

Over time, it has evolved to offer a range of functionalities, including setting alarms, making phone calls, sending text messages, and providing weather and news updates.

However, the recent surge in AI advancements, particularly with the emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has prompted Samsung to consider integrating generative AI technology into Bixby.

Despite its widespread usage, Bixby has yet to fully tap into the capabilities offered by AI technology. Choi highlighted the potential of generative AI and large language model (LLM) technology to change Bixby’s role and enhance its intelligence in the future.

Samsung has yet to provide a specific timeline for the rollout of generative AI features in Bixby, but Vice President Choi has emphasized the company’s diligent efforts to implement them. Choi stated, “We are working hard,” sharing the aim of enabling more natural conversations and supporting Samsung’s ecosystem of products.

Meanwhile, industry analysts speculate on Samsung’s strategic move, especially in light of Apple’s anticipated announcements regarding generative AI at its upcoming developer conference in June.

Amidst increasing competition in the AI assistant space, with Google promoting Gemini as a conversational alternative and Apple reportedly planning an AI-powered upgrade for Siri, Samsung finds itself in a pivotal position. As rivals enhance their offerings, Samsung may be compelled to accelerate its efforts to integrate generative AI into Bixby to remain competitive in the evolving landscape of AI-driven technologies.
