Samsung Electronics has finally revealed the world’s inaugural AI-powered smartphone, the Galaxy S24 series. This announcement, made on Wednesday, is anticipated to reshape user interactions with the world by integrating artificial intelligence. The Galaxy S24 series, showcased at Samsung’s Unpacked event, encompasses three variants: the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24.

Samsung is strongly emphasizing AI to redefine user experiences, competing head-to-head with industry counterparts such as Apple. The integration of AI tools within the Galaxy S24 series aims to enhance the appeal of Samsung’s Android devices, promising innovative capabilities to meet the evolving demands of users.

“The Galaxy S24 series transforms our connection with the world and ignites the next decade of mobile innovation,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

“Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open up new possibilities,” he further added.

The Galaxy S24 series features three variations — the Galaxy S24 Ultra with a 6.8-inch screen and an S Pen stylus, the Galaxy S24 Plus with a 6.7-inch screen, and the Galaxy S24 with a 6.2-inch screen. It leverages Samsung’s proprietary Galaxy AI technology to introduce novel user experiences in calling, messaging, camera functionality, and work efficiency.

The S24 series, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24, and Galaxy S24+, is priced competitively, with the S24 starting at $800 (€740) and the S24+ at $1,000 (€920). The flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra, renowned for its top-tier features, comes with a hefty price tag of $1,300 (€1,190) for the 256 GB model.

It is a $100 (8%) increase from the previous year’s comparable model, mirroring the pricing strategy employed by Apple for its premium offering, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, released in September.

The Galaxy S24 series introduces innovative features that enhance the messaging and search experience by integrating Galaxy AI. Notably, real-time translation capabilities are seamlessly integrated into major mobile messenger apps, allowing users to access translation services directly within the Samsung Keyboard app.

Additionally, Samsung has collaborated with Google to introduce the ‘Circle to Search’ feature, providing users a novel and efficient search experience. While engaging with web content, social media, or YouTube, users can effortlessly initiate searches by drawing a circle on any screen, eliminating the need to switch between multiple search apps. This partnership leverages Google’s Large Learning Model (LLM) Gemini to optimize user interactions and redefine how individuals engage with their smartphones.

Also, the ‘circle to search’ function enables users to highlight, tap, scribble, or circle any part of an image, triggering instant search results and providing comprehensive information about the selected content.

This user-friendly approach extends to other AI capabilities, including translation of voice recordings, generative editing of photos to fill in non-existent backgrounds, and the ability to transform real-time videos into slow-motion by leveraging AI to generate non-existent frames.

The integration of Galaxy AI in the S24 series enhances productivity in work and study. The Note Assist feature simplifies organization by summarizing and converting written content into formats like meeting minutes.

Acknowledging the demand for longer-lasting devices, Samsung announced that its Galaxy devices will receive seven generations of OS updates and seven years of security updates.

The Ultra model demonstrates a dedication to sustainability, utilizing a minimum of 50% recycled cobalt in the battery and 100% recycled rare earth elements in the speakers. The phones also incorporate titanium for increased durability, and the packaging boxes are crafted from 100% recycled paper material.

With Apple expected to incorporate more AI into its upcoming iPhones, Samsung’s early adoption of AI technologies provides a competitive edge in making AI ubiquitous and user-friendly.
