Samsung Relaunches Exynos: Unveils Exynos 2400 for Flagship Smartphones

Samsung has unveiled the Exynos 2400, its next-generation flagship smartphone processor. It is a return of the Exynos chip series for high-end smartphones after it was temporarily suspended due to previous performance issues. 

At the inaugural Samsung System LSI Tech Day 2023 event, the company showcased its latest analog and logic semiconductor technologies innovations. Attended by around 300 customers and partners, the event featured tech sessions led by Samsung executives, delving into various topics from System LSI humanoids to artificial intelligence and the company’s ongoing research and development efforts. 

The Exynos 2400 processor has improved its performance in its central processing unit (CPU) and neural processing unit (NPU). While there’s a 1.7 times increase in CPU performance compared to its predecessors, it has also improved NPU capabilities, with a 14.7 times boost. 

Additionally, Samsung introduced a novel AI tool tailored for upcoming smartphones, showcasing text-to-image AI generation using the Exynos 2400 reference board.

Although specific details about the graphics processing unit (GPU) were not provided, Samsung did mention that the GPU is based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture. 

With these advancements, Samsung aims to deliver a more immersive gaming experience, incorporating advanced optical effects like global illumination, reflection, and shadow rendering, thanks to the processor’s significantly enhanced ray tracing capabilities.

“Generative AI has quickly emerged as perhaps the most significant trend of the year, demanding more powerful foundational technologies to process data and bring AI to life,” emphasized Yong-In Park, President and Head of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. 

He went on to state, “We are paving the path toward a new era of proactive AI, leveraging our Samsung System LSI Humanoid platform, which seamlessly converges our capabilities across a broad spectrum of logic semiconductors, from powerful computational IPs, connectivity solutions to sensors emulating the main five human senses.”

The Exynos 2400’s performance is paramount, considering its predecessors’ underwhelming performance, which led to the suspension of the Exynos series last year.

The Exynos 2200 chip, featured in the Galaxy S22, faced overheating issues, necessitating Samsung’s attempt to rectify the situation with a pre-installed Game Optimizing Service (GOS) app, which imposed restrictions on the phone’s functions. 

However, this in-house chipset fell short, leading to its abandonment. Consequently, the subsequent Galaxy S23 series relied entirely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset, manufactured using TSMC’s 4-nanometer technology.

Notably, Samsung introduced its innovative Zoom Anyplace technology, built upon its 200-million-pixel image sensor. The sensor promises a fresh camera zoom experience, allowing mobile users to capture up to 4x close-up shots of moving subjects without compromising image quality. AI-driven tracking technology seamlessly follows and records objects while maintaining a full-screen view, ensuring no detail goes unnoticed or uncaptured.

Industry experts anticipate that Samsung will likely employ the Exynos 2400 chipset to power select models of its flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones, scheduled for release in the first half of the coming year.
