Samsung Research President Outlines AI Vision for Samsung

Renowned artificial intelligence (AI) expert Sebastian Seung has called upon Samsung Electronics to capitalize on the current momentum and emerge as a leader in the AI industry. In a post on Samsung’s internal knowledge-sharing platform, Seung highlighted the significance of the “Personal AI Revolution,” likening it to the transformative impact of the internet and mobile phones.

Seung, President of Global Research and Development at Samsung Research, is a distinguished figure in the AI landscape. His expertise in brain neuroscience has positioned him as a driving force in the field. Recruited by Samsung in 2018 to explore its AI research capabilities, Seung holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University. His role encompasses shaping Samsung’s AI strategy and guiding its trajectory for future growth.

Seung has coined this transformative phase as the “Personal AI Revolution,” foreseeing its magnitude akin to the societal shifts brought forth by the internet and mobile phones.

Seung asserts that the new AI ecosystem comprises major platform companies offering generative AI and smaller entities creating human-in-the-loop models through their application program interfaces (APIs).

Seung emphasizes the pivotal juncture at which we stand, where both remarkable prospects and substantial threats converge in AI. He asserts that AI is transforming into a tool accessible to all for enhancing personal productivity, akin to the transformative impact of the personal computer revolution in the 1980s. He echoes his prediction that the “Personal AI Revolution” will mirror the seismic shifts brought about by the advent of the internet and mobile phones.

Samsung Research’s Next Generation home appliance research team has taken a significant stride by establishing a Smart Home AI Lab. The lab’s mission is to engage in cutting-edge research and development aimed at differentiating home appliances and services through the integration of AI technology. This strategic move underscores Samsung’s commitment to harnessing AI’s potential to elevate user experiences in home appliances.

Samsung Electronics is collaborating with Samsung SDS to develop its proprietary generative AI technology.

Cheun Kyung-who, the CTO of Samsung Electronics’ Device Experience (DX) Division and President of Samsung Research has elucidated the company’s internal generative AI development roadmap. It includes coding support, document summarization, email transmission, enhanced internal productivity, and AI integration into Samsung devices. The company is gearing up to commence beta testing within its ranks in October, with plans for this technology to become accessible to employees by the end of the year or early next year.

Samsung‘s concerted efforts in AI research and development position the company at the forefront of innovation and growth in this dynamic field. President Seung, a distinguished figure in neuroscience-based AI, holds an esteemed academic background, with a doctorate from Harvard University and substantial experience as a Bell Lab researcher and a professor of physics at MIT.

“Coding support and more will begin beta testing within the company from October and will be opened to employees by the end of the year or early next year,” Cheun said.
