LG revealed its plans to apply 100% renewable energy to its domestic and overseas operations by 2050 in addition to its 2030 carbon neutrality goal.

LG Electronics announced that it plans to comprehensively adopt renewable energy sources for its domestic and international operations by 2050. This move comes on top of the company’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

In its new mid to long-term plan, LG would operate all its existing distribution centers and facilities in North America using renewable energy before the year ends. Meanwhile, the company would gradually apply 100% renewables to its other overseas operations by 2025.

If the South Korean electronics innovator accomplishes its latest 100% green energy goal, renewables could take up more than half of its overseas and domestic operations’ electricity usage.

Applying Renewable Energy Solutions

Moreover, LG’s action plan would involve generating renewable energy using high-functioning solar panels. The company would also invest more in obtaining renewable energy certificates (REC) and establish power purchase agreements to acquire renewable energy directly.

Similarly, LG developed the LG NeON H in April, an eco-friendly, high-efficiency solar panel, offering an ultra-reliable, carbon-free green solution.

LG also plans to subscribe to the ‘green premium,’ purchasing green energy from KEPCO, South Korea’s largest electric utility. Separately, KEPCO recently unveiled the industry’s first-ever wind turbine-maneuvering vessel, considerably helping developers minimize offshore wind tower assembly times.

As part of its 100% renewable energy plan, LG established a 3.2-megawatt solar power generator in its Noida, India facility. LG also listed the plant as an emission-reduction initiative coinciding with the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

According to LG, the project would enable it to earn Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits from the CDM. Besides this achievement, LG could meet its goals under the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement to minimize carbon dioxide emissions.

Furthermore, LG plans to apply renewable energy to more than 60% of its domestic plants’ energy usage before 2030. The company also aims to boost the ratio to 90% by 2040 and 100% by 2050.

Promoting a Sustainable Future

“We will do our best to ensure everyone can lead a better life by pushing forward with various initiatives, such as making the transition to renewables and achieving carbon neutrality,” said Park Pyung-gu, Head of LG Electronics Environment Safety Unit.

The LG official also noted that these initiatives would enable LG to deliver more positive impacts on the environment, promoting a sustainable future. Previously in 2019, the company introduced its 2030 zero-carbon initiative, targeting to minimize greenhouse gas emissions by half.

LG also vowed to keep markets informed by regularly posting sustainability reports and updates of its emission reduction efforts’ progress. Additionally, LG Innotek, an LG Corporation affiliate, reduced 45,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions in its 2020 Sustainability Report.
