Samsung Electronics Co. shared that it had won the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) highest Energy Star program recognition. The Energy Star program’s primary goal is to help businesses and consumers adopt better energy-efficient practices, helping protect the environment. Thanks to its long-term efforts to mitigate climate change, Samsung received the prestigious Energy Star Corporate Commitment Award.

Corporate Commitment Award

Energy Star also created the Corporate Commitment Award to honor companies that take comprehensive approaches to address the global climate crisis and succeed in applying energy-efficient throughout their US operations. In addition to its actions against climate change, Samsung won the award due to its firm leadership commitments and partnerships.

Moreover, the South Korean electronics manufacturer is the first company in nine years to earn the highest EPA recognition. The Corporate Commitment Award also strengthens Samsung and the EPA’s interdependent relationship. Since 2013, the EPA granted Samsung eight Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Awards, demonstrating awardees’ exceptional company-wide management.

“We are extremely honored to receive this rare and prestigious award and commit to continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency as an important part of tackling climate change,” said Choi Kyung-Sik, Samsung Electronics North America’s CEO. Choi also emphasized that Samsung is highly dedicated to reducing environmental impacts in its practices, products, and other business operations.

Energy Efficiency Efforts

Since 2009, Samsung has saved approximately 270 million metric tons of carbon emissions through its energy-saving manufacturing, distribution, and recycling. Samsung has also improved its energy efficiency efforts by developing innovative products that consume less power but deliver high functioning. Notably, six next-generation Samsung refrigerators received the Energy Star Emerging Technology Award last year thanks to their energy-saving digital compressors.

Besides earning awards, Samsung partnered with the EPA for the Energy Star Tenant Space program that promotes space management improvements. Samsung also plans to minimize its operations and supply chain’s climate impacts by upholding previous renewable and clean energy commitments. Additionally, the company vowed to boost its sustainable practices across all of its sites and continuously support climate change mitigation strategies.

This April, Samsung also received two awards from the EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management program for its sustainability and environmental efforts. In particular, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 eco-conscious packaging received a Champion Award for consuming fewer materials and not using plastics. The company also won the SMM Champion Award for its proficient e-waste disposal system.
