Samsung announced it would supply 5G technologies to NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest telecom operator, enhancing its 5G connectivity with O-RAN solutions.

Samsung Electronics Co. announced that it would provide 5G network solutions to Japan’s largest mobile phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo Inc. Particularly, Samsung will supply the Japanese telecom operator with its advanced 5G technologies as part of its 5G-related business expansion. Currently, DoCoMo offers high-quality mobile connection services to over 80 million users throughout Japan. On top of that, DoCoMo plans to strengthen its telecom operations and deliver more cutting-edge technologies in partnership with Samsung.

As the South Korean tech giant stated, the collaboration with DoCoMo will give customers access to upgraded 5G services. Samsung also revealed that both companies plan to advance their business digitalization and continuously support high-grade wireless 5G network services. Under the business agreement, Samsung will issue its 5G solutions to DoCoMo, including its O-RAN (open radio access network) technology.

According to Sadayuki Abeta, DoCoMo Radio Access Network Development Department’s VP, its main goal is to offer the best possible solutions to its users. Abeta also announced that Samsung would improve DoCoMo’s ‘Lightning Speed 5G’ coverage to address customers’ diverse needs. Besides the ‘Lightning Speed 5G’ expansion, the two companies will collaborate to accelerate the next phase of Samsung’s 5G O-RAN.

Furthermore, the US-based market research firm Dell’Oro Group remarked that the Samsung-DoCoMo partnership would surely generate new and innovative solutions. Dell’Oro also stated the cooperation demonstrates Samsung’s capacity as a leading 5G connectivity and tech developer and provider. In addition to its O-RAN-compliant technologies, Samsung has been developing other 5G technologies, including air interfaces, chipsets, and more.

Samsung’s Continuously Growing 5G Network Market

“Our goal is to leverage Samsung’s technical leadership to bring the best network solutions to mobile operators around the world so that they can deliver the next generation of transformative 5G services and electrifying user experiences,” said Satoshi Iwao, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Japan’s Network Division. Iwao also said that the Japanese Samsung subsidiary is pleased to be collaborating with DoCoMo in its 5G network operations. According to Samsung Japan, it is looking forward to providing 5G solutions to DoCoMo’s customers and expects more future collaborations.

Aside from upgrading DoCoMo’s wireless services, Samsung Electronics has been steadily partnering with tech companies, supporting ultra-fast 5G solutions further. Earlier this March, the company launched a studio for 5G and AI-related solutions in Singapore with IBM and M1. Additionally, Samsung conducted 5G standalone trials in the Czech Republic with Germany’s Deutsche Telekom.
