LG, Qualcomm Develop Ultra-Fast 5G-Powered Connected Car Platform

LG Electronics Inc. partners with Qualcomm Technologies for the development of ultra-fast 5G-powered connected car platforms.

LG Electronics Inc. announced they are collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies for the development of a 5G platform for automobiles. Due to the growing demand for connectivity technology in vehicles, LG Electronics collaborated with Qualcomm for the advancement of wireless car connectivity solutions. Along with other automotive solutions providers, the two companies have started developing 5G-connected car platforms.

“As mobile innovation leaders, LG and Qualcomm Technologies are bringing decades of research and development experience to the automotive industry, specifically in the area of 5G automotive platforms,” said Park Jong-sun, Vice President of LG Electronics. “Building on our long engagement with Qualcomm Technologies in the connected car segment, we believe 5G is vital to the deployment of a fully connected car platform.”

Through the use of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technologies, 5G automotive platforms provide cloud connections to cars. The 5G platforms connect cars to surrounding base stations, supporting real-time transmission, navigation, gaming, and emergency calls. Due to its capacity for low latency and ultra-fast connections, 5G platforms can aid the advancement of next-generation self-driving automobiles.

“Qualcomm Technologies’ heritage as an innovative wireless technology company has empowered us to engineer 4G and 5G platforms that unlock the potential of connected transportation, as well as advanced infotainment and telematics systems while delivering the promise of improved vehicle safety and autonomy,” said Nakul Duggal, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technologies.

LG Electronics automotive ventures

With the Qualcomm partnership, the South Korean electronics company solidified its drive for delivering technology solutions for the auto industry. Qualcomm is an automotive solutions provider and the world’s leading semiconductor supplier in telematics and wireless car connectivity. In 2019, LG Electronics partnered with the car solutions provider for the webOS Auto, an in-vehicle infotainment system. Equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Development Platform, the two companies designed the webOS to supply high-quality processing power.  

Aside from Qualcomm, LG Electronics also collaborated with Magna International for a joint project involving electric car gear. Last year, the two companies announced they would be manufacturing components for electric cars. The joint project is called Magna e-Powertrain, and it will involve the manufacture of chargers, e-motors, and electric drive systems.
