South Korea ’s average download speed from three of the country’s major telecommunication carriers, SK Telecom, KT Corporation, and LG Uplus, extends to 690.47 Mbps. According to a report by the Ministry of Science and ICT, it progressed by up to 33.91 Mbps from the quality inspection in the year’s first half.
In the average download transmission speed aspect, SK Telecom delivered the fastest 5G download speed at 795.57 Mbps (6.60 Mbps increase). KT Corp. followed next with 667.48 Mbps (15.38 Mbps increase), and LG Uplus with 608.49 Mbps (79.89 Mbps increase).
Mobile users experienced a stable connection to 5G network 90.99 percent of the time. The major telecommunication carriers provided a development from the 67.93 percent connection rate in the first 2020 quality check.
The Ministry of Science and ICT presented data on the scope and quality of telecommunication companies’ wired and wireless Internet services. They conduct quality evaluations twice a year to propagate network investments from mobile communication companies.
The report stated that health institutions, shopping centers, and other public facilities equipped with 5G networks acquired an average of 3,486 throughout the sample areas. Subway stations with 5G connections also increased from July’s 313 to November’s 424.
During the first half of the year, the quality evaluation only included sample groups from areas with 5G connections. This year’s second telecom quality survey involved subject areas throughout major administrative districts in 85 cities. The overall results indicated an improvement in download speed, quality, and accessibility.
South Korea’s 5G milestones
South Korea was the first to release 5G services in commercial markets, promptly establishing a 5G user base of over 9 million by September. The 5G mobile user base amounts to 13.2 percent of the country’s 70 million-mobile subscription.
“Our country is building a nationwide 5G network by 2022, and we are trying to expand coverage and improve quality by promoting competitive investment by telecommunication companies,” said an official of the Ministry of Science and ICT. “In order to enjoy the communication service of 5G, we will conduct continuous quality evaluation for services such as LTE and Wi-Fi, as well as 5G.”
