LG Uplus, a South Korean mobile carrier, said that it formed an international 5G extended reality (XR) alliance named “Global XR Content Telco Alliance” to develop augmented and virtual reality content.

The group consists of different telecom firms, including U.S.-based Qualcomm, Bell Canada, China Telecom, Japan’s KDDI, and LG Uplus as its facilitator. Additionally, Canada-based realistic content production company, Felix & Paul Studios, and French VR firm Atlas V would participate as production partners.

According to LG Uplus, the alliance would develop quality virtual and augmented reality content by combining their resources and technologies.

The group’s first XR content would highlight a 3D virtual reality video series, which would launch this November sequentially. Felix & Paul Studios would work closely with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to show a spacewalk shot at the International Space Station (ISS). Time Studio and the Canadian Space Agency would also participate in the creation of the VR series.

Bringing New and Distinctive Experience

XR or Cross Reality involves a wide range of software and hardware that allow for the development of virtual, mixed, and cinematic reality content. Users can now build new forms of reality by interchanging digital objects into the physical world and vice versa. LG Uplus said that industries would benefit from the many applications of XR technologies.

Lee Sang-min, LGU+ FC division head, said that the XR alliance would enhance the technological maturity of creating high-quality XR content. Lee added that the group would also produce more content, expanding the scope to various fields while merging new technologies.

LG Uplus said that it would offer membership to other mobile carriers and partnerships with production companies. The company added that collaboration with global companies would deliver a new and distinctive experience for XR users.

LG Uplus intends to produce AR/VR content videos presenting different entertainment fields, such as concerts and sports documentaries.
