LG Display announced on Friday that it had provided the world’s first transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for windows used on China’s subway trains.

LG Display installed the 55-inch transparent displays on subway line No.6 in Beijing, and on subway line No.10 in Shenzhen. The window displays provide various real-time information ranging from news, weather forecasts, transit maps, and train and airline schedules.

However, LG did not disclose the exact details of the transparent display supply deal and the number of screens supplied.

Initially, LG Display developed the transparent OLED screens to cater to the business-to-business (B2B) market. The display maker said that commercial areas would benefit significantly from the state-of-the-art transparent display. Retail stores could promote and provide information on their products on store windows.

The affiliate said that one way to use the display is to place the actual products behind and overlay videos and images on the object.

LG said that supplying the cutting-edge displays to the rapidly growing B2B market could become a major source of income for the company.

Diversifying Transparent Display Solutions

To expand in other regions, the company said that it plans to partner with other train window makers.. LG Display also aims to diversify transparent display solutions to penetrate the growing market further.

Prescient & Strategic Intelligence, a global consulting company, expects the transparent display market to see a 46 percent average annual growth. The global consulting company added that by 2024 the transparent display market would reach 5.87 trillion won ($4.93 billion).

Vice president of LG Display’s TV business division Oh Chang-ho said that more industry sectors would use transparent OLED displays, allowing LG to offer diverse display solutions.

Currently, LG is discussing additional contracts with other Chinese train line operators and those in other countries.
