Hyundai Rotem Unveils Driverless Metro Cars for Taoyuan’s Green Line Ahead of Schedule

Hyundai Rotem Co., a South Korean manufacturer specializing in rolling stock and defense equipment, has successfully delivered Taiwan’s first batch of driverless metro cars. A ceremony marking the arrival of the two-car train was held on December 26 at the Green Line vehicle base in Taoyuan City.

0The event was attended by notable figures, including Taoyuan Mayor Chang Shan-jung and Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae, alongside government officials and industry representatives.

The two cars are part of an 80-unit fleet for the driverless Light Rail Transit (LRT) system on Taoyuan’s Green Line. Notably, the first delivery arrived three months ahead of schedule.

The two-car train, part of an 80-unit fleet for the Taoyuan Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, arrived three months ahead of its originally scheduled delivery in March 2024. Hyundai Rotem plans to complete the delivery of all 80 vehicles by 2029. It is the company’s first step in transforming Taoyuan City’s urban transport system with a modern, autonomous rail network.

The Taoyuan Green Line is the city’s first urban light rail system and will ultimately connect the city center with Taoyuan International Airport. Hyundai Rotem was awarded the turnkey contract for the project in 2018, which includes the supply of vehicles, communication systems, and automatic fare collection systems.

The project involves collaboration with Siemens and BES Engineering to support seamless integration and execution. Siemens provides critical components such as CBTC control systems, traction drives, and power supply equipment, while BES Engineering oversees construction, including track laying and station building. This partnership leverages advanced engineering to enhance the rail system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency, meeting global standards.

Hyundai Rotem’s accessibility is evident in the design of the trains, which include dedicated seating for pregnant women, wheelchair spaces, and user-friendly features. The company’s president, Lee Yong-bae, reaffirmed its focus on quality and timely delivery, promising to supply high-quality rail vehicles equipped with the latest technology to ensure a safe and convenient commuting experience for Taoyuan residents.

The Taoyuan Green Line is an infrastructure project designed to improve urban mobility in Taoyuan City by connecting key areas, including the city center and Taoyuan International Airport.

The autonomous light rail is expected to enhance accessibility, reduce traffic congestion, and boost the city’s economic appeal for businesses and residents. The trains, capable of speeds up to 80 km/h, are equipped with Hyundai Rotem’s advanced Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), ensuring seamless operations and real-time management.

Including CBTC technology optimizes traffic management and improves operational precision and safety, aligning with Taiwan’s push to modernize its transportation infrastructure. Hyundai Rotem officials emphasized the company’s dedication to delivering high-quality, reliable rolling stock on time, promising Taoyuan residents a safe and convenient transit experience.
