SK Group and Geely Expand Collaboration on Green Automotive Solutions

SK Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group have deepened their collaboration in eco-friendly automotive technologies. This intensified partnership focuses on advancing electric vehicles and battery innovations, building on a year of growing cooperation between the two industrial giants.

SK Group, alongside its subsidiary SK On, is accelerating its joint efforts with Geely, a prominent Chinese automotive conglomerate, to enhance its combined expertise in sustainable mobility solutions.

In November of the previous year, SK On, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, secured a contract to supply battery modules for the “Polestar 5,” an upcoming premium electric vehicle under Geely Group’s Polestar brand, set for production next year. The agreement began a more profound strategic alliance between SK and Geely.

On June 11, SK Group and Geely Group made their collaboration with official a “strategic business cooperation agreement.” This pact is designed to boost their joint ventures in electric vehicle batteries and automotive electronic components.

Further, Geely Group executives visited SK On’s battery manufacturing facility in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, on July 20. This visit focused on examining the battery production process and discussing the ongoing cooperation.

On July 29, top executives from Geely Group, including senior representatives from its premium electric vehicle brand Zeekr, visited SK Seorin Building in Seoul.

The delegation, consisting of Geely’s technology, R&D, and international cooperation teams, was greeted by SK Group Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won and SK On CEO Lee Seok-hee. Their discussions centered on progressing their joint projects and initiatives.

SK Group and SK On are fast-tracking their alliance with Geely Group, which is among the world’s top 10 car manufacturers. Geely Group, which includes brands like Geely Automobile, Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, reported 2.79 million vehicle sales last year, with over 980,000 units being electric or new energy vehicles.

The partnership seeks to explore prospects in sustainable technologies, such as electric vehicle batteries, charging infrastructure, and automotive electronic components. Additionally, there are ongoing talks about supplying nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) ternary batteries from SK On. An SK On representative, however, has chosen not to disclose more details on OEM-related matters.
