CJ Freshway Corp. and Hanwha Robotics have partnered to jointly develop food robots to enhance efficiency and working conditions in the food service sector. The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the two companies on Thursday.

Under the agreement, CJ Freshway, a subsidiary of South Korea’s CJ Group specializing in canteen services and food ingredient distribution, will collaborate with Hanwha Robotics, a subsidiary of Hanwha Group focusing on robotics, to introduce autonomous collaborative robots into the food service value chain.

The initiative seeks to optimize various aspects of the food service process, including ingredient pre-processing, menu preparation, serving, clearing, and dishwashing, aiming to improve operational efficiency and create a more favorable work environment.

As per insights from Grandview Research, a renowned global market research firm, the cooperative robot market is projected to reach approximately $1.6 billion by 2023.

CJ Freshway has confirmed the collaboration agreement with Hanwha Robotics to develop and commercialize autonomous technologies and collaborative robots jointly. These newly-designed robots will be equipped to handle various tasks, including food ingredient preparation, menu cooking, meal serving, and dish cleaning, enhancing efficiency and productivity in the food service industry.

In parallel, Hanwha Robotics will take charge of developing and manufacturing robot automation systems, assuming responsibility for the entire technology verification process, ensuring seamless integration into operational workflows.

Hanwha Robotics’s notable presence in the industry, highlighted by its demonstrations of various food tech technologies employing collaborative robots at both domestic and international exhibitions, has drawn considerable attention.

In recent developments, the company has forged a partnership with Hanwha Food Tech, which specializes in food technology and jointly advocates for the establishment of an R&D center. This strategic business collaboration aids Hanwha Robotics to target the food service automation market actively, leveraging its expertise and resources to propel innovation and efficiency in the sector.
