Naver Collaboration Boosts HD Hyundai’s Digital Shift

HD Hyundai Co. has partnered with Naver Corp. to expedite its digital transformation efforts, the company announced on Monday. This collaboration plans to leverage Naver’s cloud technology and artificial intelligence (AI) expertise to drive innovation within the shipbuilding industry.

HD Hyundai will integrate Naver’s cloud and AI technologies into its shipbuilding and offshore engineering operations through a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday at Naver’s GAK Sejong data center. Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun from HD Hyundai, CEO Choi Soo-yeon from Naver, and senior executives from both organizations attended the event.

As part of their collaboration, HD Hyundai will leverage Naver’s HyperCLOVA X to implement generative AI (GenAI) services, utilizing its extensive shipbuilding and maritime database.

Additionally, HD Hyundai and Naver have outlined plans to migrate HD Hyundai’s existing infrastructure to the Naver Cloud platform. By transitioning to Naver’s stable cloud infrastructure and leveraging its proven AI technology, HD Hyundai aims to accelerate its digital transformation efforts and realize its vision for the future of ocean transformation.

Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun expressed confidence in Naver’s capabilities to advance HD Hyundai’s strategic objectives in the maritime industry.

Under the MOU, HD Hyundai will integrate Naver’s HyperClova X, its proprietary large language model, into its vast database, comprising over 200 million shipbuilding and maritime records. The collaboration plans to convert the extensive information HD Hyundai has amassed into big data utilizing Naver Cloud and subsequently share it with shipowners.

Shipowners will benefit from optimized navigation routes tailored to various environmental conditions by applying artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning techniques.

Moreover, the upcoming launch of the “Meta Ocean Data Cloud,” an ocean data platform developed on Naver Cloud infrastructure, is anticipated in the year’s first half. The platform, a joint endeavor between HD Hyundai and Naver, will serve as a resource for shipowners by aggregating operational data from vessels worldwide. Both companies will explore novel business opportunities within the shipbuilding and maritime sectors as part of their collaboration.

Naver’s AI tech will be crucial in developing an AI chatbot for HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s ship and engine after-sales service. With the collaboration, the two companies aim to leverage Naver’s expertise in cloud infrastructure and AI technology to help HD Hyundai’s vision of “Ocean Transformation” forward.

HD Hyundai’s Vice Chairman, Chung Ki-sun, emphasized the transformative potential of Naver’s stable cloud infrastructure and proven AI technology in advancing the company’s strategic objectives.
