Naver, the Korean conglomerate, has launched the world’s inaugural web platform-based operating system (OS) for robots. Known as “Arc mind,” this innovative OS is set to debut at LEAP 2024, a prominent tech expo held in Saudi Arabia this week.

Naver is set to participate in the LEAP 2024 event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, alongside industry giants like Google, AWS, Apple, Meta Platforms, and other global tech leaders. At the event, Naver will introduce “ARC mind powered by Whale OS,” the world’s premier web platform-based robot operating system, aiming to empower developers worldwide in creating diverse robot services.

The platform is a collaboration between Naver Cloud’s Whale web technology and Naver Labs’ robotics software. Kim Hyo, General Leader of Naver Cloud, highlighted the company’s journey from web platform development to robotics software innovation, showing the technical expertise behind ARC’s mind. Leveraging Whale OS, the platform offers high scalability, enabling developers to utilize advanced technologies for future robotics applications.

Naver’s strategic plan involves initially deploying ARC minds on its own robots, leveraging its speed and efficiency compared to traditional robot operating systems. Subsequently, the company aims to establish an open ecosystem, collaboration and innovation among developers worldwide. With this, the company plans to create an optimal environment for developing and providing diverse robot services for integrating robotics into future urban landscapes.

Peck Jong-Yoon, an executive officer at Naver Labs, emphasized ARC Mind’s competitive edge over existing robot operating systems, making it a viable alternative to widely used open-source platforms.

By enabling developers to integrate web applications into robot services and offering specialized web APIs for controlling and recognizing robots, ARC Mind opens new possibilities for web developers worldwide.

Naver’s strategic roadmap involves gradually implementing the OS into its robots before transitioning to a fully open ecosystem.

Unlike traditional operating systems, ARC Mind leverages the existing web platform, enhancing compatibility and productivity. Developers can seamlessly integrate various web applications into robot services, simplifying the development process and accelerating the deployment of new features. For instance, the system enables the integration of existing payment systems like Naver Pay, streamlining the implementation of new services such as payment systems for delivery robots.

The global robotics software market is witnessing rapid growth, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. According to market research firm IMARC Group, the market is expected to reach $43.5 billion by 2028, highlighting the immense opportunities in the robotics industry.

Since Naver aims to expand its presence in the robotics sector, its collaboration with industry leaders like Samsung Electronics is expected to drive innovation in the future of robotics technology.
