Hyundai Mobis, a key player in the automotive industry, officially announced the establishment of the Electrification Research Center at the Hyundai Motor Group’s Uiwang R&D Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, on Tuesday morning. The inauguration ceremony was led by the recently appointed President Lee Gyu Suk.

At the opening ceremony, Kyu-seok stated, “The Electrification Research Center is a strategic hub for next-generation electrification technology with an optimal research environment. We will concentrate core capabilities on specialized research personnel and utilize them as an electrification field innovation base.”

The newly inaugurated Hyundai Mobis Electrification Research Center is expected to play a key role in advancing the development of core components for electrification. This facility spans four underground floors to five above-ground floors, serving as a centralized hub for research and development (R&D), testing, performance evaluation, and quality analysis of essential electrification components.

Consolidating Hyundai Mobis’s dispersed electrification R&D capabilities, previously spread across various locations, is a strategic move to enhance research efficiency and enable a more proactive response to the expanding global electrification market.

The new Hyundai Mobis Electrification Research Center, sprawling across a substantial 71,405 square meters, is a nine-floor facility encompassing four basement floors dedicated to research and analysis. The company aims to enhance its global competitiveness by recruiting specialized research personnel.

Meanwhile, the Mabuk Research Center focuses on key components for autonomous driving, connectivity, and chassis safety. This dual-center approach will focus on advancing both electrification and other crucial automotive technologies.

Hyundai Mobis, known for its real-world testing, operates a driving test facility in Seosan. This facility is a critical space for evaluating the performance and reliability of research and development outcomes in actual vehicles.

Viewing the establishment of the Electrification Research Center as a pivotal step, Hyundai Mobis envisions itself as a Mobility Platform Provider, offering integrated solutions centered around future-oriented software.

The center is a part of the company’s strategy, articulated at this year’s CES, to transform into a ‘Mobility Platform Provider’ by emphasizing software-centric integrated solutions, with electrification as a key business area.

The success of Hyundai Mobis has cumulative electrification sales surpassing 9,794.1 billion won ($7.45 billion) in the third quarter of 2022. This achievement exceeded the total electrification sales for the entire preceding year.

Operating nine electrification production bases globally, including six domestic and three overseas, Hyundai Mobis is strategically expanding its reach. The company is actively establishing six new bases in key locations such as Korea, North America, and Indonesia, a move bolstered by a substantial investment of $940 million secured from seven international financial institutions.

This capital injection will facilitate the development of a new electrification base in North America to meet the demands of the global electrification market.
