The “Media Tech Open Lab” event hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong-ho) and co-hosted by IITP (Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation, Director Seong-bae Jeon) and KETI (Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Director Hee-dong Shin) was held on June 8th, at the Pangyo Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

This event is part of the government’s ‘Digital Media and Content Industry Innovation and Global Strategy’ initiative established in November last year, and the initiative aims to foster technology development by linking media and content organizations with media outlets and streaming service companies. The event was designed to build a collaborative commercialization network through sharing the process, exchanging results, and promoting their technologies.

The media and content work environment based on AI and data has rapidly changed and attracted attention. Korea’s content industry, especially using artificial intelligence and data, is rapidly expanding in new markets such as the Middle East and South Asia. The event showcased the overseas localization technology of Korean content. The event featured lectures, technology exchanges, exhibitions, and open lab tours.

The lecture program consisted of three sessions. The first session was a keynote speech by Lee Jun-woo, a project manager at IITP, on “AI and Data-Based Digital Media’s R&D Promotion Method.” In Session 2, a KETI executive gave a presentation on the topic of “Subtitle/dubbing Technology and AI-based Content Production and Editing for the World Media Market.” In Session 3, Gaudio Lab and Twig Farm presented the current industry needs for technology and the status of media technology development.

Besides the lectures and presentations, technology promotion booths and open lab events were held. The technology promotion booth was set up in the auditorium on the first floor of the Global R&D Center. The booth showcased KETI’s realistic media, human interaction, smart media technology, and Twig Farm’s AI-based content localization technology.

The Open Lab also offered a unique format that allowed the general participants to access the AI and ultra-realistic open studio laboratories, and to enjoy technology demonstrations or experience activities.

A Ministry of Science and ICT official said, “The Media Tech Open Lab is a platform for media R&D companies to gather and communicate with each other. It is a significant event that helps us reflect the industry needs in the government’s R&D tasks.” He added, “We will continue to host the Open Labs regularly in the future to align the government’s R&D projects with the essential needs of the media and content industry.”
