Samsung Galaxy Watch to debut Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature in upcoming One UI 5 Watch update

Samsung has received FDA clearance for its Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature on the Galaxy Watch. The feature aims to provide users with a more comprehensive understanding of their cardiovascular health by monitoring heart rhythms indicative of atrial fibrillation (AFib) in advance. Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics, highlighted that the feature prioritizes proactive safety solutions.

AFib is a warning sign for potential cardiovascular issues that can lead to stroke, heart failure, and other complications associated with cardiovascular health. It is alarming that some AFib cases are asymptomatic or silent, making people not aware of the underlying risks.

The IHRN feature works alongside the Galaxy Watch’s Electrocardiogram (ECG) function and will be taken from the user’s wrist. In addition to IHRN, the new update will also include personalized heart rate zones and emergency SOS. These features are aimed at keeping Samsung competitive with other market players such as Fitbit and Apple.

It will also be available on previous models such as the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 series. Samsung plans to release a One UI 5 Watch beta for existing Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 users soon. This feature may be included in the beta version, however, there is not a confirmation yet.

Heart disease is a serious issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It is one of the causes of death globally, and in Korea. Irregular heart rhythms, such as AFib, are often a warning sign of potential heart conditions and can increase the risk of stroke and heart failure. Early detection and monitoring can play a crucial role in preventing or managing these conditions. Samsung’s Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature can help users proactively monitor their cardiovascular health and receive early warnings of potential heart issues.

The competitive smartwatch market presents an opportunity for Samsung to promote its next-gen Galaxy Watches, set to release soon. Google is expected to provide updates about its Wear OS 3 platform at the upcoming Google I/O conference, despite a rocky start. The Pixel Watch has ranked second in the market, and the Pixel Fold will likely add to the pressure on Samsung to keep up.
