LG U+ is going to offer free Spotify to its mobile users for six months in a bid to strengthen the service’s presence in the country.

Spotify’s premium plan, the only one available in Korea, will be available to the subscribers of LG U+ mobile plans, including the 5G Premier, 5G Signature, and LTE Premier plans. People using other 5G and LTE plans will get a three-month free trial.

LG U+ strives to bring Spotify to the top

Of the three major mobile carriers, LG U+ is the only one with no music streaming service of its own. The telecom service is trying to change this aspect while aiding Spotify to expand in the sixth-largest music market in the world after its launch in the country on February 2.

As of May, Spotify only had 1.04% of the local music streaming market since its launch in February. Data analysis company IGA Works found that there were 326,000 monthly active users for Spotify by June. Melon, under Kakao Corp., had 8.56 million monthly active users, and Genie Music had 5.05 million.

In comparison, Spotify had 165 million paid subscribers globally as the second quarter.

What to expect from the partnership

“The strategic partnership with Spotify, the world’s leading music streaming platform, well-known and acknowledged for its advanced personalized service and music curation, will enhance our competitive edge,” said Choung Hye-youn, Vice President of LG U+’s communication unit. “We will continue to do our best in creating benefits to our customers,” He added.

From August 13, LG U+ and Spotify will begin a wide range of co-marketing activities, including TV commercials.
