Microsoft Korea, on Monday, announced the launch of its mixed-reality headset dubbed the HoloLens 2 in South Korea. The company aims to provide the head-mounted computer to customers planning to incorporate digital transformation into their business.

The HoloLens 2 is the latest edition of the world’s first mixed-reality wearable that uses three-dimensional hologram technology. According to Microsoft, it made the latest device more comfortable and lighter. The first-generation HoloLens came out in February last year, targeting the medical, educational, and corporate markets needing remote assistance.

The wearable holographic computer differs from other MR, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) platforms as it integrates the user’s hand gestures and voice interactions in real-time. The technology overlays digital images onto the real world, helping users visualize objects in their surroundings.

“The mixed-reality gadgets will bring about greater change than the smartphone.”

– Lee Ji-eun, Microsoft Korea CEO

Enhancing Productivity Amid Physical Distancing

HoloLens 2 features twice the viewing angle of the company’s previous headset and ultralight carbon fiber materials. Microsoft Korea said that the second-edition wearable device uses hand-tracking sensors as its primary input. The HoloLens 2 also allows users to focus more on performing tasks, as it does not require a separate controller.

The device also allows users to utilize Microsoft’s AI and cloud service to share project details with various devices. This makes it possible for users to remotely share critical information and assist large-scale projects and in real-time.

Lee said that the HoloLens 2 offers total solution services to businesses in the mixed-reality industries and advanced programs and AI services. He added that the platform would enhance productivity, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, where physical contact is problematic.

However, Microsoft said that individual online purchases for HoloLens 2 would not be available. The company has not disclosed the price for the mixed-reality headset.

Chevron, a U.S-based petrochemical company, has incorporated the HoloLens platform to its operations.
