Naver, Korea’s first web portal, said that it would focus on launching its live video streaming platform V Live, globally. Thanks to the booming popularity of K-Pop, such as with BTS, there is a very high demand for more immersive and interactive viewing experiences. Naver plans to make V Live a global entertainment platform by the end of the year.

V Live

V Live, a live video streaming platform, allows K-Pop groups to broadcast live videos on the internet freely. The service also enables them to interact with their fans through chat. The streaming platform broadcasts reality shows, performances, and award shows, giving fans access to their favorite K-Pop idol. Additionally, many of the videos posted are behind-the-scenes episodes of shows.

Naver believes that V Live would become a way for K-Pop groups to reach out to fans around the world. It also allows the non-Korean speaking audience to connect with their favorite K-Pop groups. Currently, South Korea has the most users, with China and the U.S. coming in second and third, respectively.

Going Global

Naver intends to target Vietnam first, followed by Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan, tapping into each country’s massive K-Pop following. Since V live’s launch in 2016, the streaming platform has grown over 30 million visitors per month, with almost 80 percent comprising of foreigners.

V live launched its “Fanship” platform in March last year featuring live interactive streaming and big data technology. Fanship creates a place where fans can pay to interact with their favorite influencers and celebrities. The platform would create new value in the international entertainment industry.

VR + 5G

In the era of 5G, new possibilities for streaming services and content creation are available for the idols and fans. V Live provides the most realistic and immersive viewing experiences with virtual reality coupled with 5G technology. The audience would feel like they are actually in performance venues with their favorite K-Pop groups.

V Live hopes to establish K-pop VR content for mass adoption. With a full 5G VR experience, it will make it possible for K-Pop entertainment companies to sell their content directly to the consumers.

Popular K-Pop groups such as BTS, BlackPink, and Twice have channels in V Live.
