LG Unveils World’s First Rollable OLED TV

Update:

LG Display announced a new version of its signature rollable TV during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 held in Las Vegas last January.

After last year’s delay, Tim Alessi, LG’s Senior Vice President of Communications, said that consumers could expect the R9 series to be released later this year. The 2020 model has been upgraded with LG’s latest Alpha A9 III chip and also a cool new feature to roll downwards from the ceiling.

The exact price and release date of the device have yet to be determined. However, reports say that LG’s new rollable TV is likely to be somewhere around $60,000 (72.4 million won) for a 65-inch OLED TV display.

The ‘LG Signature OLED TV R’ was on display at CES 2019, the world’s largest IT exhibition in Las Vegas.

The screen does not use back lights reducing the thickness to the point where the display can be rolled up and down much like projector canvas backdrop. The LG Signature OLED TV R has three viewing forms: aside from the ‘Full View’, and ‘Zero View’ (rolled up state), its ‘Line View’ allows for a partial screen display.

Despite being rolled up inside its housing, Zero View allows audio with 4.2 channel 100W speakers.

LG’s new TV received the ‘CES 2019 Innovation Awards’ in Video Display.

Sales will start in South Korea and gradually expand to global markets.

“We are going to show the essence of display evolution through rollable OLED TV for the first time in the world.”

President Kwon Bong-seok of LG Electronics’ MC (Mobile Communication) and Home Entertainment (HE).
