South Korea’s SK Telecom has partnered with Nokia to advance AI-based fiber sensing technology. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to commercialize this wired network technology, aiming for nationwide deployment in South Korea by 2024. This collaboration will leverage AI to monitor and detect environmental changes around optical cables, helping to maintain stable network conditions.

Nokia developed the technology, which is designed to sense and respond to events such as earthquakes, climate changes, and disruptions from nearby construction. By incorporating this fiber sensing capability, SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile carrier, seeks to enhance the reliability and resilience of its network infrastructure across the country.

Fiber sensing technology detects various environmental factors that can impact fiber optic cables. As data passes through these cables, the light phase within the fiber can shift due to changes in temperature, physical strain, or other external influences. These shifts can be precisely monitored and analyzed to identify potential threats to network stability.

The partnership will commercialize fiber sensing technology in South Korea by the end of this year, leveraging SK Telecom’s existing wired network infrastructure to gather machine learning-based demonstration data. This data will enable companies to refine the accuracy of their technology in detecting sudden events such as earthquakes, strong winds, heavy rain, and cable cuts caused by nearby construction.

The ultimate goal is to create an intelligent preemptive response system that can stabilize the wired network before potential disruptions occur. By monitoring and analyzing environmental conditions in real-time, SK Telecom hopes to minimize damage to its network infrastructure and prevent service interruptions.

Nokia’s fiber sensing technology is expected to cover the entire nation, surpassing the limitations of current network monitoring methods that can only operate over limited distances. This coverage will enable SK Telecom to enhance the reliability of its network, ensuring uninterrupted service even in the face of environmental challenges.

Fiber sensing technology offers advantages for broad applications by leveraging existing wired network infrastructure without the need for additional equipment. Unlike traditional monitoring systems with distance limitations, fiber sensing technology can be implemented across extensive distances, making it suitable for large-scale backbone networks.

In collaboration with Nokia, SK Telecom plans to use AI-driven technology to proactively stabilize fiber networks by monitoring the effects of environmental factors on optical cables, such as weather conditions and construction activities. This initiative will help ensure uninterrupted service by addressing potential issues before they escalate.
