Korean Air, alongside Hyundai Motor Company, Korea Telecom (KT), Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC), and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, has successfully concluded the world’s inaugural comprehensive demonstration of urban air mobility (UAM) operations.

This achievement has helped the Korean Urban Air Mobility (K-UAM) Grand Challenge to showcase Korean Air’s validated UAM system over five weeks starting from March 11 at the Goheung Aviation Test Center in South Jeolla Province.

On April 24, Korean Air publicly announced the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Korean-style Urban Air Mobility (K-UAM) Grand Challenge at the Goheung UAM test site in South Jeolla Province.

The collaboration between Korean Air Lines Co., Hyundai Motor Co., and KT Corp. has proven the efficacy of an integrated urban air mobility (UAM) operational system leveraging a 5G aviation communication network, a feat on the global stage.

This marks the successful culmination of the initial phase of the Korea Urban Air Mobility (K-UAM) Grand Challenge, achieved through joint efforts with Hyundai Motor, KT, Incheon International Airport Corp., and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co.

Drawing upon its extensive operational experience, Korean Air showcased the reliability and efficacy of its in-house developed proprietary UAM Operation Control System and Traffic Management System, ensuring safe and efficient urban air travel. Through a series of ten meticulously planned scenarios, encompassing both normal and abnormal situations, the airline tested the functionality and performance of these systems, gathering valuable data for further refinement and enhancement.

KT’s role in the consortium involved developing a sophisticated platform system to process and disseminate real-time transportation and safety data required for UAM flights.

During the demonstration period, this platform processed over 100 million data points, including UAM flight plans, locations, alerts, and weather conditions, facilitating seamless communication and coordination among various systems. The collaboration will help the parties realize the full potential of urban air mobility, laying the groundwork for safe, efficient, and sustainable aerial transportation in high-density urban environments.
