Hyundai Motor Group‘s Chung Euisun officially takes the mantle of chairman of the carmaker conglomerate, leading the group into the future. The younger Chung’s promotion came after the groups’ three affiliates, Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp., and Hyundai Mobis Co., conducted separate board meetings, unanimously inaugurating him as the new group’s chairman.

Meanwhile, the board inaugurated his father, former Chairman Chung Mong-koo, to the position of Honorary Chairman.

Chung’s appointment opens a new chapter in the group’s history, aiming to transform into a future mobility solutions leader. With the vision “Together for a Better Future,” HMG would develop and acquire novel technologies and capabilities as it faces industry challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic.

“All of our goals and efforts must be customer-centric. The first step to customer happiness is to enable them to focus on their own lives through the perfect quality of our products and services.”

Together for a Better Future

In a video message to executives and employees, Chairman Chung stressed the customer-centric approach of the group. He also presented the future direction of HMG, focusing on four concepts: “customers,” humanity,” future,” and “social contribution.”

Under his leadership, Chung would likely fast track efforts to pursue future mobility innovations across the conglomerate. Since his appointment as the group’s de-facto leader, Chung has aggressively sought to shift from a traditional car manufacturing business into a future mobility solutions provider.

In a press release, HMG said that it would provide innovative mobility solutions personalized to the customer’s lifestyles. The group also plans to grow its market leadership in various fields such as self-driving cars, robotics, AI, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cells to drive growth.

Even before his promotion, Chung saw the benefits of hydrogen energy and supported the growth of a hydrogen ecosystem.

“Hyundai Motor Group aims to become a company cherished for realizing humanity’s dream of safe and free movement and peaceful life, as well as sharing its fruits with customers around the world.”

-Chung Euisun
