Samsung Electronics has introduced 3-nano chips and 2-nano chips manufacturing technology. Commercially first in the industry, the South Korean tech giant will start manufacturing the 3-nano chipsets in the first half of 2022. The mass production will be based on Gate All Around (GAA) technology, according the announcement made by the company officials.
The new 3-nano process technology will be 35% smaller than 5 nm semiconductors, yet it is expected to have 30% better performance than its counterparts. Samsung looks at the project as a part of its “Semiconductor Vision 2030.” The company officials spoke to the media regarding their recent development of the chipset. “We will expand our production capacity through large-scale investments and continue our technological innovation in existing processes as well as high-tech micro-processes such as GAA,” the officials added.
Around 500 organizations, more than 2000 fabless consumers and partners have done their pre-registration at the Samsung Foundry Form 2021. The announcement by Samsung highlighted the features of GAA transistors at the forum. The company revealed that the first batch of 3-nano chips production is expected to start by the first of 2022, which will be completed by 2023. Similarly, its next-gen 2-nano chipsets will be produced by the end of 2025.
“With rapid digital transformation due to COVID-19, Samsung Foundry will provide differentiated values to apply customers customers various ideas to chips,” Choi Si-Young, Samsung Electronics Fauntry President stated while addressing the topic at the forum.
Lee Jae-Yong, the vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics, had discussed the development of 3-nm microfabrication technology on his last visit to Samsung’s semiconductor research center in Hwaseong, . He spoke about the company’s further plans in the device solutions (DS) sector.
After Intel, Samsung is the largest semiconductor producer in the international market, followed by TSMC of Taiwan which is at the third position. TSMC announced that the company aims to explore 3-nano processing to produce CPUs and GPUs for Intel. The project is expected to start in July 2022. Hence, industry insiders believe that Japan’s tech giant happens to be the first company to invest in the mass production of 3-nano chipsets before Samsung unveiled its vision.
With the announcement of 3-nm chip production, the tech giant has proven to compete for the top position in chipmaking technology. Samsung Electronics shares jumped high with a 0.98 rise in its value, making it $60.5 on the announcement day.
Samsung Electronics is likely to supply the 3nm semiconductors to LSI, a company subdivision that engages in designing chipsets. The unit may plan to invest in next-gen Exynos production with the latest 3GAA chips application. It’s a processor that is used in the manufacturing of Galaxy high-end phones.
