SK Telecom Co., a leading South Korean wireless carrier, set up an exhibit featuring some of its future innovations at the COEX Center. In particular, SK Telecom showcased its newest technologies, including the 5G 28GHz, a quarantine robot, and other metaverse-related services.
The telecommunications company conducted the event at the COEX Center located in Samseong-dong. Moreover, SK Telecom organized the exhibit as part of the country’s Ministry of Science and ICT’s (MSIT) 28GHz deployment project.
“We prepared for visitors to safely experience ICTs (information and communication technologies) that represent the 5G era, such as AI quarantine robots and metaverse,” said SK Telecom. The company also vowed to establish more 28GHz business-to-business-type services and develop 5G-era-leading innovative technologies.
Offering Ultra-Fast 5G Speeds
During the exhibit, SK Telecom enabled visitors to experience firsthand the 5G 28GHz pilot service, which presents low latency and ultra-fast speeds. Besides giving a glimpse into SK Telecom’s future technology offers, 5G 28GHz further promotes and vitalizes South Korea’s 5G adoption.
The company would also launch the pilot service across 10 locations in partnership with other telecommunication operators. After the COEX event, SK Telecom plans to apply the 5G 28GHz technology to the Jamsil Baseball Stadium and Jeju World Cup Stadium this August.
Delivering Real-Time Disease Prevention
Furthermore, SK Telecom presented Keemi, a next-generation, artificial intelligence (AI)-backed quarantine robot. Earlier this April, SK Telecom developed the 5G network-connected Keemi robot, providing various medical functions.
Thanks to its AI technologies, including facial recognition, SK Telecom’s Keemi tracks visitors’ body temperatures, encourages social distancing, and more.
Aside from offering numerous health-related tasks, Keemi contains a cutting-edge, 24-hour disinfection system, keeping susceptible areas free from infectious diseases. SK Telecom also equipped Keemi with a 28GHz modem, allowing it to monitor premises autonomously and deliver real-time control operations.
Cultivating the Metaverse Scene
In addition to the new 5G technology and Keemi robot, SK Telecom showcased its future services optimized for metaverse. Exhibit visitors could also access SK Telecom’s “Crazy World VR,” which offers a diverse sports gaming range.
Additionally, the telecommunication provider plans to apply metaverse technologies to various services, including live broadcasting and virtual conferences.
In the same vein, the company had been recently expanding its metaverse-related services. For instance, SK Telecom strategically partnered with ViveStudios, a local virtual reality production company, and combined their respective 3D technologies.
SK Telecom also teamed up with Kakao VX to launch South Korea’s first-ever metaverse broadcast system. Notably, the two companies developed the “AI Highlight,” a technology that recognizes, polishes, and displays sports players’ moves in real-time.
