LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics will reveal their latest editions of enhanced refrigerators powered with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

The two South Korean tech giants announced on Wednesday that they would showcase their smart fridges at the upcoming Consumers Electronics Show 2020, which will take place next week in Las Vegas, U.S., from January 7 to 10.

The premium refrigerators will include improvements in their AI technologies, internet of things (IoT), and several upgrades and added convenient features that can better serve consumers.

According to the companies, both refrigerators will feature a food inventory management software that can automatically identify items added through built-in cameras that can recognize images. Dubbed as “food AI,” the software can recommend customized recipes.

LG will exhibit its InstaView ThinQ refrigerator featuring an LCD attached to its right-side door, which, when tapped twice, will turn transparent, allowing the user to check the food contents of the refrigerator. The WiFi-enabled device also allows users to order groceries and monitor food items and suggests possible recipes.

An extra feature of the InstaView ThinQ refrigerator is its Proactive Customer Care Service that uses AI technology to provide useful tips to consumers preventing potential service issues with the appliance.

Another proprietary technology that LG will showcase is the LG InstaView Door-in-Door Refrigerators equipped with Craft Ice. The technology, which won the CES 2020 Innovation Award, is designed to produce various types of ice cubes appropriate for different beverages.

Meanwhile, Samsung will display the fifth edition of its Samsung Family Hub, which won the CES Innovation Award for five consecutive years, since its introduction in 2016. Family Hub is the first IoT-based refrigerator model.

The company said that the new 2020 model Family Hub analyzes food items the users store in the refrigerator and recommends recipes with the available ingredients. Consumers can also make an online order for groceries they would need.

LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics will create partnerships with online shopping platforms so that consumers can easily order groceries in the comfort of their homes.
