The shipbuilding industry will take the ‘next level’ powered with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group and KT‘s increase in cooperation in developing fifth-generation (5G). The telecom company said on Monday that the 5G technology would create ‘smart’ shipyards.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Chairman Kwon Oh-gap, KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu, and other top executives participated in the 5G digital transformation joint workshop held by the two companies at Hyundai Heavy’s headquarters in Ulsan.

The workshop gave the two companies a chance to further enhance their collaboration in the application of 5G technology to shipbuilding.

Hyundai Heavy Chairman Kwon, KT Chairman Hwang, and senior executives from both companies gathered to share the latest technological advancements in KT’s Seoul office last November.

The leading shipbuilding firm and one of South Korea’s significant telecommunications companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a 5G-powered smart factory jointly.

The two companies have since utilized in a project Hyundai Heavy’s shipbuilding know-how and KT’s state-of-the-art technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) technology and 5G networks.

According to the mobile carrier, KT Chairman Hwang and other executives witnessed firsthand the various digital systems applied to Hyundai Heavy to increase productivity, reduce cost, and ensure safety.

The shipbuilding company applied advanced systems powered by 5G provided by KT, such as wearable neckband cameras designed to send a 360-degree real-time view to the integrated control tower.

The neckband aids employees respond faster to an emergency and engage in rescue operations more efficiently.
The telecom company also noted that Hyundai Heavy officials monitor 5G-based UHD closed-circuit televisions footage in real-time using the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

KT Chairman Hwang also gave a special talk in the afternoon. He lectured on the Korean telecom’s launch of the world’s first commercially available 5G networks in April and imparting his view on advancement through AI and 5G.

On the side of Hyundai Industries Holdings, Chairman Kwon stated the shipbuilding industry would benefit significantly from 5G-connected smart shipyards, making a rebound from the grip of a recession.

He said, “Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will lead the innovation of the nation’s manufacturing industry through cooperation with KT.”
