Kakao Entertainment Named First Korean TCRP Partner by Google

Kakao Entertainment has become the first domestic entertainment company to be chosen as an official partner of Google’s Trusted Copyright Removal Program (TCRP). Kakao has been combating illegal distribution, particularly in the webtoon and web novel industries, through initiatives such as P.CoK (Protecting the Content of Kakao Entertainment).

This partnership, announced on the 16th, will enable Kakao Entertainment to enhance its global response to illegal content distribution. The TCRP is a Google-operated intellectual property (IP) protection program that partners with companies supplying consistent, high-quality data on illegal content.

Currently, around 200 companies and institutions worldwide are active partners in the TCRP, an increase from the 178 partners Google reported in 2017.

The selection of Kakao Entertainment as a TCRP partner marks the first instance of a domestic entertainment company achieving this status. This recognition validates the company’s effectiveness in P.CoK (Protecting the Content of Kakao Entertainment), the company’s dedicated team for responding to illegal distribution.

As a TCRP partner, Kakao Entertainment benefits from more efficient reporting processes and an increased capacity for reporting illegal content. This partnership further strengthens its efforts to combat piracy and protect its content globally, reinforcing its role as a leader in IP protection within the entertainment industry.

The selection of Kakao Entertainment as a TCRP partner is anticipated to accelerate the company’s response to illegal distribution activities. Unlike general reports, which have daily limits on the number of reports and lengthy processing times, TCRP partners can rapidly process large volumes of illegal content reports. This enables Kakao Entertainment to block infringing activities directly as an IP holder, enhancing its ability to protect its content efficiently.

Kakao Entertainment’s proactive approach includes sharing its copyright infringement response know-how with the industry by publishing semi-annual white papers, particularly focusing on webtoons and web novels. This initiative has established a systematic response system that successfully blocked around 240 million illegal items globally from 2019 to 2023. TCRP’s recognition validates the effectiveness of their P.CoK team, which has been instrumental in these efforts.

Attorney General Lee Ho-jun of Kakao Entertainment emphasized that being selected as a TCRP partner is instrumental and shows its intent to eradicate illegal distribution globally. He stated that this partnership would further enhance their ability to protect their IP and expand their crackdown on infringement across all their intellectual properties, ensuring a more robust defense against piracy.
