South Korea plans to invest 710.2 billion won (USD 526.9 million) in government projects to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday life. The announcement, made by the science ministry on Thursday, indicates a push towards leveraging AI across various sectors.
The AI Strategy High-Level Consultative Council, a government-civilian panel tasked with shaping AI policies, convened its inaugural meeting and approved the investment plan for 69 AI projects. These initiatives, covering a wide range of sectors, aim to enable people to experience the benefits of AI in their daily lives.
The AI Strategy High-Level Consultative Council has allocated funds for various AI projects, with approximately 75.5 billion won designated for 18 initiatives to improve daily life. Additionally, 288.1 billion won has been set aside for 24 projects targeting workplace-related enhancements, while 115.7 billion won has been allocated to 14 initiatives focusing on public administration.
Moreover, according to reports from Yonhap news agency, around 230.9 billion won has been set aside for AI education and ethics programs. These investments reflect South Korea’s comprehensive approach to integrating AI into society, covering aspects ranging from daily life improvements to workplace efficiency and ethical considerations.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has outlined various AI projects that benefit society, including developing software to diagnose and manage rare pediatric diseases and severe medical conditions. Additionally, initiatives will focus on creating AI-based digital medical devices to aid in the early prediction and management of autism spectrum disorders.
Moreover, plans involve leveraging AI in public services to support individuals with disabilities by distributing communication aids and healthcare services. Furthermore, AI technologies will enhance disaster response capabilities for scenarios such as fires, floods, and infectious disease outbreaks, ensuring greater efficiency and effectiveness in public safety measures.
By harnessing AI’s capabilities, the government aims to ensure swift and effective responses to emergencies, ultimately enhancing public safety and minimizing the impact of disasters on communities.
The government’s efforts extend to deploying AI across various industries, with plans to develop specialized AI services for fields such as law, medicine, and psychological counseling. These tailored AI solutions aim to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in these sectors, paving the way for advancements in service delivery and problem-solving.
