SK Telecom Co., one of the pioneers of the fast-growing South Korean metaverse market, officially launched Ifland, a new metaverse platform. Metaverse refers to a social virtual space where users communicate using digital avatars.
Promoting Metaverse Services
Over the recent months, metaverse gained attention due to more users shifting to digital spaces for day-to-day activities. Following the metaverse traction, SK Telecom unveiled Ifland as part of its goal to deliver outstanding user experiences through diverse virtual settings and avatars.
This month, SK Telecom opened an exhibit showcasing its future innovations, including the “Crazy World VR,” a metaverse-optimized gaming service. The company has also been actively expanding its metaverse ventures, partnering with industry-leading companies such as ViveStudios and KakaoVX.
Furthermore, SK Telecom aims to gradually transform and popularize Ifland into a leading metaverse platform specialized for the 5G era. To this end, it would utilize its advanced technologies and accumulated expertise from operating metaverse services, including social virtual reality (VR) and virtual meet-ups.
At present, only Android OS users could download the Ifland app. However, SK Telecom plans to extend the platform’s availability to iOS users. The company would also install Ifland to the VR device Oculus Quest’s OS.
Providing a Platform for Individual Expression
South Korea’s largest wireless carrier also applied an intuitive user interface (UI) to Ifland, enabling users to use metaverse seamlessly. Once users activate the app, they can check their status and update avatars, which appear on the screen’s upper part.
Users could also view Ifland’s list of recommended metaverse rooms based on their specific usage patterns. Additionally, users could choose from 18 different virtual space types, including bonfire rooms, conference halls, outdoor stages, playgrounds, and rooftops.
SK Telecom also plans to install more virtual environments and introduce new features in the future. According to the telecommunications operator, the Ifland platform allows users to express their individualities, offering around 800 avatar customization options.
Supporting Diverse, Large-Scale Events
“Armed with powerful content and social features that meet the needs and interests of the MZ Generation, Ifland is set to fully support users’ metaverse life,” said Jeon Jin-Soo, President of SK Telecom’s Metaverse CO.
Besides being a representative 5G platform, Ifland enhances user convenience by delivering various social networking services. In particular, Ifland provides metaverse conference, meeting, and presentation support, allowing users to share documents and files.
Currently, each Ifland virtual space only houses up to 130 users. SK Telecom also aims to conduct large-scale metaverse operations in Ifland, meeting users’ practical needs. For instance, Ifland would soon offer new programs, including career fairs, concerts, fan-meets, festivals, forums, lectures, and more.
