Samsung SDI has signed a new supply deal with Tesvolt, a prominent German player in Europe’s energy storage industry, aiming to boost its role in the commercial ESS market. Under the agreement, the Korean company will supply its integrated battery solution, the Samsung Battery Box (SBB), to Tesvolt until the first quarter of 2026.

Samsung SDI will first provide the existing SBB 1.0 units, with shipments of the enhanced SBB 1.5 model set to begin in the second quarter of next year. Tesvolt plans to incorporate these battery systems into its own energy storage solutions by combining them with in-house power conversion systems and cybersecurity features, aimed at serving the commercial market.

While the financial terms and unit volumes were not revealed, the deal marks a continuation of Samsung SDI’s long-standing relationship with Tesvolt, which began in 2017. The Korean firm expects the latest supply agreement to deepen the partnership and support its broader ambition of expanding in Europe and beyond. As part of the deal, both companies also agreed to explore future supply arrangements and pursue joint marketing efforts for upcoming ESS projects.

The Samsung Battery Box (SBB) is a 20-foot container-based energy storage system that houses racks, battery modules, and cells, and is ready for immediate use once connected to the power grid. The newer version, SBB 1.5, boosts energy capacity by 37%, delivering up to 5.26 megawatt-hours. It also offers greater durability and improved compatibility with a wide range of European inverters.

A key innovation in the SBB 1.5 is Samsung SDI’s proprietary fire prevention system. The direct injection safety mechanism releases fire-extinguishing agents directly into battery cells in the event of overheating, effectively preventing thermal runaway and reducing fire risks. This enhanced safety feature has contributed to the SBB 1.5 receiving a CES Innovation Award at the 2025 CES tech show in Las Vegas.

Samsung SDI is establishing its ESS business as a key growth engine as it seeks to diversify beyond the electric vehicle battery sector, which has recently been impacted by weaker global demand. The company showcased the SBB 1.5 and other ESS technologies at InterBattery Europe 2025 in Munich, underscoring its strategic push into the European market.

Tesvolt, founded in 2014, is one of Europe’s top providers of commercial ESS solutions and is now venturing into grid-scale projects. The integration of Samsung SDI’s advanced battery systems with Tesvolt’s in-house technologies, including power conversion systems and cybersecurity tools, will enable the German firm to deliver robust and secure energy solutions to its clients.

Tesvolt has shown a strong willingness to deepen its collaboration with Samsung SDI, highlighting that the company’s battery solutions align well with the requirements of energy storage operators. As Tesvolt moves further into the public utilities space, the partnership is expected to grow, backed by Samsung SDI’s advanced technology, reliable performance, and strong safety standards.

Samsung SDI is also seeing strong momentum in its ESS business. During its first-quarter earnings call in April, the company revealed that it had already secured contracts covering 90 percent of its planned ESS battery production capacity for the year. This signals robust demand and highlights the firm’s growing foothold in the global energy storage market.
