Naver Introduces Passkey Login to Enhance Security and User Convenience

Naver has launched Passkey Login, an innovative authentication feature that lets users access their accounts using facial recognition or fingerprint scans instead of traditional passwords. The system aims to enhance user convenience by enabling swift logins within seconds, minimizing errors from incorrect password entries, and removing the hassle of recalling complicated passwords.

The passkey login system has been implemented across Naver’s PC and mobile web platforms, with plans to integrate it into the Naver mobile app by the first half of 2024. This is a response to the growing adoption of passwordless authentication methods, backed by the FIDO Alliance to improve personal information protection.

Naver’s Passkey Login offers security benefits by replacing traditional passwords with unique biometric data, such as facial recognition and fingerprints. This approach mitigates the risks of password leaks and breaches, providing users with a safer and more efficient way to access their accounts.

The system allows for instant logins, eliminating the common issue of login failures caused by typing errors or forgotten complex passwords. By utilizing biometric information already stored on registered devices, users can authenticate themselves within seconds, enhancing both convenience and security.

The passkey login system is available on Naver’s PC and mobile web platforms. The company plans to expand this feature to its mobile app by the first half of 2025.

In addition to the passkey system, Naver has strengthened its overall security infrastructure to prevent account hijacking. The company has implemented measures such as a login blocking function that triggers personal verification for login attempts made from overseas.

Users are also notified in real-time when a login attempt is made from a new device or environment. Furthermore, Naver has introduced two-step authentication, which requires approval from a pre-approved device before completing the login process.

Naver is also running its Privacy Enhancement Reward (PER) program, which rewards users for identifying and reporting vulnerabilities or privacy issues related to its services. This initiative, the first in South Korea, has proven successful in encouraging user involvement and improving data protection. In the previous year, 268 reports were submitted, and 91 rewards were issued—an increase of 31% in reports and 11% in rewards compared to the previous year.

In 2024, Naver’s Privacy Enhancement Reward (PER) program saw a notable increase in user engagement, receiving 268 reports of vulnerabilities and privacy concerns. This marked a 31% rise in reports compared to the previous year, with the company distributing 91 rewards, the highest number recorded to date.
