LG Energy Solution (LGES), South Korea’s battery manufacturer, has announced a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies to expedite the commercialization of its new system-on-chip (SoC)-based battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solutions. This collaboration aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of electric vehicles by integrating advanced diagnostic capabilities.
The SoC-based BMS solutions will be featured on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis, a cloud-connected platform that powers the digital components of modern vehicles. Through this collaboration, LGES and Qualcomm aim to drive technology adoption in the automotive industry, ensuring more reliable and secure vehicle battery management.
Under the agreement, LG Energy Solution’s advanced BMS software will be integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis and its Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform. This collaboration aims to provide automakers with a more sophisticated and efficient battery management system. By utilizing Snapdragon’s high-performance computing power, the system can collect more data than traditional BMS, allowing for faster and more accurate detection of potential anomalies, including thermal incidents.
LG Energy Solution’s new BMS offers improvements over conventional systems. With over 80 times the computational power, it can handle complex algorithms that were previously unattainable. This enhanced processing capability enables the system to predict battery degradation more accurately and detect abnormal behaviors at an earlier stage. Additionally, the system includes new features to forecast remaining battery capacity and provide detailed information about battery components, such as the cathodes and anodes.
The new diagnostic solution is based on LG Energy Solution’s 8,000+ patents in BMS technology, which boasts a defect detection accuracy rate of over 90%. Thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence, the system operates with a margin of error of less than 1%. These advanced capabilities will not only improve vehicle safety but also contribute to the overall performance and lifespan of electric vehicle batteries.
LG Energy Solution’s CEO, Kim Dong-myung, stated that collaborating with Qualcomm opens up new opportunities for system-on-chip-based BMS diagnostic solutions. This technology is expected to be a key player in the future of mobility, offering both improved battery safety and more reliable performance. With this official move towards commercialization, the companies aim to revolutionize battery management systems for electric vehicles.
In addition to its focus on electric vehicle (EV) batteries, LG Energy Solution recently launched the B.around brand, which specializes in battery management solutions (BMS) to diversify its revenue streams. The company aims to double its sales by 2028 by expanding into non-EV businesses, particularly as global EV sales have faced a decline. By focusing on BMS, LG Energy Solution is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the growing market for advanced battery technologies in various industries.
The new BMS diagnostic software can analyze vehicle data, such as driving information, in real time without requiring a separate server connection. This capability allows for more efficient and immediate diagnostics within the vehicle, improving overall performance.Â
