LG Energy Solution has officially launched its battery-swapping service for electric scooters through its subsidiary, KooRoo. KooRoo eliminates the inconvenience of lengthy charging times for electric scooter users by offering a quick battery-swapping solution.

KooRoo, the brainchild of LG Energy Solution, is the world’s second-largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer. Its battery-swapping stations provide electric motorcycle riders with fully charged batteries in just 20 seconds, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of urban transportation systems.

KooRoo’s battery-swapping service for electric scooters offers users the convenience of exchanging depleted batteries for fully charged ones rather than waiting to recharge. It aims to lower operating costs and increase convenience for delivery riders, addressing concerns about the limited range of electric motorcycles. A recent pilot program with delivery platforms like Woowha Youth demonstrated a high adoption rate, with 70 percent of participants choosing to become paying members.

KooRoo’s innovative approach addresses these challenges, offering a sustainable and efficient solution for urban delivery services. Riders participating in the pilot program highlighted several advantages of using electric two-wheelers and KooRoo’s battery-swapping service.

These include quieter operation during night deliveries, emission-free riding, easy access to densely located swapping stations, and lower maintenance costs. With vehicles in the program costing half as much to maintain as conventional models, based on an assumed daily distance of 125 kilometers, riders stand to benefit while enjoying a more seamless delivery experience.

KooRoo’s mobile app enhances user experience by providing real-time information on station congestion levels, enabling reservations, and integrating with navigation systems for safe driving to stations. Authentication is required only once, facilitating battery swaps in less than 20 seconds.

The batteries are compatible with various two-wheeler models, offering flexibility and convenience to riders. Moreover, LG Energy Solution’s advanced battery safety diagnostic technology ensures the longevity and safety of the batteries, with over 180 swapping stations strategically placed across Seoul for optimal accessibility. With plans to expand the network to 1,000 stations by 2025, KooRoo plans to grow in urban mobility and set new standards in electric vehicle services.

LG Energy Solution’s advanced battery safety diagnostic technology, integrated into KooRoo’s battery swapping stations, monitors key metrics such as charge status, remaining battery life, and temperature in real-time. This system, operational around the clock, ensures optimal battery performance and safety. Additionally, the battery control system and drainage structure mitigate the risk of electric shock, particularly in wet weather conditions, enhancing user safety and confidence in the service.

At the InterBattery 2024 conference held at Coex in southern Seoul from Wednesday to Friday, KooRoo will demonstrate its battery-swapping service and showcase its business model.

A KooRoo representative said the service enhances convenience and safety while prioritizing environmental sustainability. They expressed the company’s determination to create a two-wheeler ecosystem that values ecological consciousness and safety above all else.
