LG Electronics Sets Global Standard in AI Robotics Patents

Between 2012 and 2021, LG Electronics established itself as the global leader in AI robotics patent applications, outpacing major competitors from China and the United States. According to data from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the field of AI robotics patents experienced growth, with the number of applications rising from just 20 in 2012 to a remarkable 1,260 in 2021. Over this period, LG Electronics submitted 5,525 AI robotics patents with an average annual growth rate of 58.5%.

Between 2012 and 2021, AI robotics patent applications saw an increase, rising from just 20 in 2012 to 1,260 in 2021. The surge has shown an average annual growth rate of 58.5%, totaling 5,525 patents over the nine-year period. 

LG Electronics emerged as the leading global applicant, contributing 1,038 patents, which made up 18.8% of the worldwide total. FANUC from Japan ranked second with 97 patents (1.8%), while South China Normal University of China followed in third place with 83 patents (1.5%).

Among other South Korean applicants, Samsung Electronics placed eighth with 41 patents, accounting for 0.7% of the total applications. The data highlights the growing competition in the AI robotics sector, with LG Electronics leading the charge and being a dominant player in this field.

China accounted for the largest share of AI robotics patent submissions at a national level, with 3,313 patents, representing 60% of global activity. South Korea followed with 1,367 patents (24.7%), while the United States contributed 446 patents or 8.1% of the total. 

Despite China’s leadership in the volume of applications, South Korea, led by LG Electronics, maintains a strong position in the global AI robotics landscape. With the consistent growth in patent filings from both South Korean and Chinese companies, the countries aim to advance robotics technology to be at the forefront of the AI-driven future.

South Korea secured second place in global AI robotics patent filings, contributing 24.7% with 1,367 applications. The United States ranked third, accounting for 8.1% of the total, with 446 patents. This strong showing has got global competition in the AI robotics field, with key players in South Korea, China, and the U.S. driving innovation in robotics technologies.
