KT Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Seoul National University (SNU) to develop and test artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the power industry. The agreement aims to drive AI transformation (AX) in the energy sector, enhancing future competitiveness through advanced technology.
The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday. Key officials, including KT CEO Kim Young-shub, KEPCO President Kim Cheol, and SNU President Ryu Lim, were in attendance. The three organizations pledged to collaborate on AI-driven innovations to improve efficiency and reliability in the power business.
The partnership will focus on developing AI-powered solutions tailored to the power industry, emphasizing security and innovation. A key aspect of this initiative is the creation of a hybrid cloud-based AI system designed to enhance power infrastructure while safeguarding sensitive data. This system will use generative AI for learning and reasoning, enabling smarter energy management while implementing tiered access control to prevent security threats.
Additionally, the collaboration aims to explore new business opportunities by integrating AI into the energy sector. The three organizations will work on identifying innovative models that combine AI and power solutions, supporting startups and ventures in the process. Joint research and development (R&D) will also be a key component.
KT plans to incorporate its “Korean AI” technology, developed in partnership with Microsoft, into these AI-driven solutions. The company will leverage its Korean language-specific large language model (LLM) and AI Studio platform to continuously refine and optimize AI applications for the power industry.
Beyond domestic advancements, the partnership also seeks to expand globally. By collaborating with innovative ventures and startups, the three organizations aim to develop AI-based energy solutions with potential for international markets, positioning South Korea as a leader in AI-driven power technologies.
KT President Kim Young-seob emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that the combined expertise of KT, KEPCO, and Seoul National University will drive AI transformation (AX) in the public sector. He highlighted that this partnership will play a key role in advancing AI adoption in the national power industry.
He further noted that through active cooperation, the three organizations aim to accelerate AX in the energy sector and across other industries. By leveraging their collective capabilities, they seek to position themselves as leaders in expanding AI-driven innovations nationwide.
