Kolmar Korea Chosen to Lead Government-Backed AI Factory Initiative

Pioneering AI-driven manufacturing to strengthen K-beauty’s global competitiveness

Kolmar Korea has been selected as the sole cosmetics company to lead a government-backed AI Factory Alliance project launched by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). The initiative marks a critical step in transforming Korea’s traditional manufacturing landscape into AI-driven innovation hubs, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the global competitiveness of the country’s industries — including the fast-evolving K-beauty sector.

The AI Factory M.AX (AI Transformation) Alliance, introduced under the government’s national vision to become the “World’s Leading Manufacturing Power by 2030,” aims to accelerate industrial automation and intelligence adoption. Leading firms from various industries were chosen to spearhead digital transformation in their respective sectors — and Kolmar Korea was recognized as the exclusive representative for the cosmetics industry, reflecting its established leadership in beauty manufacturing and technological innovation.

A Kolmar Korea official stated, “Being selected as the only cosmetics company for the government’s AI Factory project recognizes our technological leadership in AI-driven manufacturing. We will leverage our autonomous AI systems to advance Korea’s cosmetic manufacturing standards and strengthen K-beauty’s global competitiveness.”

From Smart Factory to AI-Driven Autonomy

Unlike traditional smart factories that depend on pre-set human inputs, Kolmar Korea’s AI Factory will use autonomous artificial intelligence to analyze production data in real time, self-correct errors, and optimize workflows without manual intervention.

The company plans to integrate the entire cosmetics production chain — from product planning and formulation to quality inspection, filling, and packaging — into one unified AI-driven system. This approach represents a shift from automation to full manufacturing autonomy, which can:

  • Reduce human error and defects,
  • Increase precision and process accuracy, targeting over 95% reliability, and
  • Enhance flexibility for high-mix, low-volume production tailored to diverse global beauty markets.

This transition aligns with the growing market demand for personalized beauty products and faster turnaround times in product development and delivery.

Core Objectives of the AI Factory Initiative

The AI Factory project will span four years and four months, from September 2025 to December 2029, positioning Kolmar Korea as the lead company in the Bio Division of the Alliance.

The company’s main initiatives include:

  • Developing an integrated data platform that connects every stage of the production process to ensure seamless visibility, data consistency, and predictive control.
  • Building AI-powered process control models that autonomously adjust critical variables — such as temperature, viscosity, and ingredient ratios — to maintain consistent quality and performance.

Through these systems, Kolmar Korea aims to establish an AI ecosystem that improves manufacturing precision, minimizes downtime, and enhances responsiveness to fluctuating global consumer needs.

Supporting Korea’s K-Beauty Leadership in a Digital Era

The beauty industry is rapidly evolving, driven by consumer demand for customization, clean ingredients, and transparency. However, many parts of cosmetic production still rely heavily on manual labor, especially in formulation and packaging. By integrating AI technology, Kolmar Korea intends to digitally re-engineer these traditional processes, setting a new industry standard for efficiency and responsiveness.

The company also plans to share its AI Factory best practices with other cosmetics manufacturers in Korea, supporting the government’s mission to build a nationwide AI manufacturing ecosystem. This move will not only enhance industrial competitiveness but also position Korea as a global model for AI-powered manufacturing innovation.

Building on a Strong Digital Foundation

Kolmar Korea is not new to digital transformation. In 2019, it launched a smart factory system that successfully reduced defect rates by 42%, significantly improving production speed and quality control. The upcoming AI Factory will build on this foundation, applying advanced algorithms to create a more flexible, scalable, and data-intelligent production framework.

By modularizing production stages and using predictive AI analytics, the system will enable faster adjustments in line formulations, optimize machine performance, and minimize downtime — capabilities critical for maintaining K-beauty’s reputation for speed and innovation.

Expanding AI Transformation Across the Kolmar Group

Kolmar Korea plans to extend its AI Factory model globally, implementing the system at production bases in the United States, Canada, and China. Beyond cosmetics, the company also intends to expand AI integration across its Kolmar Group affiliates, including:

  • Kolmar BNH – health supplements,
  • HK inno.N – pharmaceuticals, and
  • Yonwoo – cosmetic packaging.

This cross-industry application will help build a unified, data-driven production ecosystem, reinforcing Kolmar’s position as a pioneer in industrial AI innovation.

“Our goal is to expand the benefits of AI manufacturing beyond cosmetics,” the Kolmar official added. “By sharing technology across our affiliates, we can create a smart, interconnected manufacturing network that supports global growth.”

Analysis: Why This Matters

Kolmar Korea’s participation in the government-led AI Factory Alliance highlights a strategic convergence between public policy and industrial innovation. For the government, this initiative supports its 2030 national vision of strengthening Korea’s manufacturing dominance through AI transformation. For Kolmar, it presents an opportunity to redefine how beauty products are conceptualized, produced, and distributed in an increasingly data-centric global market.
